WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Swimming & Diving Head Coach Brandt Nigro has announced the addition of Matthew Lowe to the coaching staff.
"I'm excited to welcome Matt, his wife Casey, and their son Luke to the Army West Point Swim & Dive family," said Nigro. "Matt brings incredible passion and experience to our staff and will make an immediate impact on our program. Matt's experience at Towson, both as a student-athlete and coach, will enhance our program's ability to recruit, educate, train, and inspire future leaders for our country. He has coached from the age group through the international level. Everyone I spoke to about Matt during the hiring process had nothing but great things to say about him, his work ethic, and his commitment to his student-athletes. We have big goals for our program and I'm excited to work with Matt as we continue to climb the ladder and make elite swimming and diving the norm here at Army West Point."
Lowe comes to Army West Point after a five-year run as an assistant coach at Towson. During the 2021-22 season, the Tigers broke five school records including three of the men's relay records. The men and women both finished third at the CAA Championships, with multiple event wins and best times posted throughout the season.
Lowe worked specifically with the sprinters, while also assisting Head Coach Jake Shrum with the other groups as needed and focused on recruiting for the men's team. During his time on deck at Towson both teams saw a lot of success, with a combined 44 records being broken and numerous top 10 times and freshman records for the program.
The most noteworthy swimmers for Towson were USA National teamers Jack Saunderson and Brian Benzing. Saunderson qualified for the NCAA's in 2017, 2018 and 2019 racing the 100 fly, 200 fly, and the 200IM, being named All American and representing the US at World University Games in 2019. Benzing qualified for the NCAA's in 2022 in the 100 breast and after finishing 12th at night was given All American Honorable Mention.
In addition to his coaching at Towson, Lowe was the head age group coach at the Loyola Blakefield Aquatics club during the 2017-18 season.
As a swimmer, Lowe was part of the Bahamian national team for several years and holds national records in the 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle, and 400m Medley relay. Lowe was named to the World Championships team in 2013 and 2017 and competed at the Olympic Open Water Qualifier in Setubal, Portugal in 2016.
Lowe earned his bachelor's degree in Accounting from Towson University in 2015. While at Towson, he was a freshman record holder in the 1,000-yard freestyle and holds team records in the 500, 1000, and 1650-yard freestyle events. He was also conference champion in the 1650-yard freestyle in 2014 and 2015, and runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle in 2015.
