February 25, 2022 | Hockey
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Army West Point Hockey dropped its final road contest of the season tonight in the first game of a home-and-home series with Sacred Heart. The Black Knights remain in third place in the Atlantic Hockey standings despite the loss and still have a chance to clinch home-ice advantage in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Championship. Army needs just one points tomorrow night against SHU in order to host a quarterfinal series at Tate Rink.
Eric Huss scored his first career goal and Thomas Farrell added a tally in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Black Knights and Pioneers came out of the gates energized to kick off the final series of the season. Sacred Heart put four shots on net in the first ten minutes of the period, all of which were pushed aside by Gavin Abric. Midway through the period, Andrew Quetell fired a shot on goal that ended up loose in front of the net. Eric Huss cleaned up the rebound and deposited the shot into the back of the net to give Army a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers were able to beat Abric later on in the frame, but the sophomore saved the other 14 shots he faced to keep the score tied after 20 minutes.
Sacred Heart held the Cadets in check during the second period, blocking two shots and saving nine others to keep Army off the board. The Pioneers scored twice in the period to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
Thomas Farrell scored his 10th career goal in the third period to cut the SHU lead but the Pioneers answered back with two more goals to bring the score to 5-2. The score would stay that way as Sacred Heart went on to take game one of the series.
