ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Following completion of the 2021-22 Patriot League Championships' initial five events, the Army West Point swimming & diving team checked in at second overall in both the men's and women's team standings.
The teams placed 14 total Black Knights on the podium to accumulate 115 points on the men's side and 66 on the women's, trailing the first-place Navy men (124) and women (115). Army's night was additionally highlighted by its first gold medalist of the meet in Daniel Alaimo, who captured the 3M Dive, as well as the 800 Free Relay entries, which broke the men's and women's program records.
The Men's Meet
Army had a strong start to the championship meet, earning top finishes in two of the three opening events.
After finishing fourth overall in the 200 Medley Relay, the diving tandem of Alaimo and David Manelis got the Black Knights onto the podium by securing the top two spots on the 3-meter diving board. Alaimo scored 353.20 to win his first-ever Patriot League title, while Manelis' 339.85 landed him at second. Isaac Newman also collected key points for the Black Knights, placing fifth.
In the final event of the night, the Black Knights posted a strong finish with a record-breaking performance in the 800 Free Relay. Tanner Falls, Sean Dwyer, Ian Tansill and Kevin Lin laid down a time of 6:27.38 to claim second, besting third-place Bucknell by over three seconds. Army's previous record of 6:28.61 was originally posted in 2018.
The Women's Meet
The Black Knights kicked off the meet in thrilling fashion, finishing in the top three in both relay events.
Army's quartet of Lauren Carag, Aurelie Migault, Angela Huang and Meghan Cole got things started for the Cadets with a second-place swim in the 200 Medley Relay, out-touching the Boston University entry by less than half a second. The group's time of 1:40.87 was just 0.52 seconds off of the program record.
The early momentum carried into the following event, as Sammie Edwards, Melinda Zhang, Margaret Kroening and Clara Williams teamed up to finish third in the 800 Free Relay with a new program record at 7:20.66.
