Records Fall, Army Maintains Second-Place Standing at Patriot League Championship
February 17, 2022 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West Point swimming & diving team continued to maintain second place in the team standings of the 2021-22 Patriot League Championships following the second day of action at Lejeune Hall.
The men's team's 273 total points check in behind Navy (312), with the women's score of 221 also trailing the Mids (329.5).
After a thrilling opening night, the Black Knights picked up where they left off by placing 12 different cadet-athletes onto the podium, highlighted by event wins from Meghan Cole (200 IM) and Owen Harlow (50 Free). Army also saw four different records fall during the course of the action, as Cole re-wrote her own program record in the 200 IM, Harlow set a new meet record in the 50 Free, Evan Yoo posted a plebe record in the 200 IM and Wes Tate re-wrote his own plebe record in the 500 Free.
The Men's Meet
Army's momentum established during Wednesday's finals sessions followed it into Thursday, as the team kicked off the evening with three top-eight finishes in the 500 Free, collecting 40 points. Ian Tansill paced the group with a fourth-place finish and was joined in the scoring by Sean Dwyer (sixth) and Tate (seventh).
Things continued to build for the Black Knights in the following event, which saw their first podium finish of the night when Yoo touched the wall third in the 200 IM. Yoo was one of five different Cadets that scored for the team, with Sam Wesley (eighth), Bruce Bannister (ninth), Kevin Lin (12th) and Evan Zhang (16th) all contributing as well.
Finally, Owen Harlow got Army back on top of the podium once again with a dominant performance in the 50 Free, where his NCAA B Cut time of 19.72 set a meet record while pacing the field by almost a full quarter of a second. The quartet of Will Rankin (ninth), Ian Shahan (11th), Nick Isenhower (13th) and Tanner Falls (14th) also added scoring finishes.
Harlow then helped the Cadets close out the night with another medal, helping Jacob Powell, Zhang and Shahan place second in a tightly-contested 400 Medley Relay. Harlow's final leg helped the team secure a 0.03-second margin of victory over third-place Boston University.
The Women's Meet
The Black Knights put together another strong finals session on Thursday, scoring in each of the night's five events while landing on the podium in all but two.
Cole earned the Cadets' first gold medal of the Patriot League Championship in the second event, as she touched the wall first in the 200 IM with a program record time of 2:00.14. Melinda Zhang (fourth), Aurelie Migault (12th) and Maggie McDonald (14th) also scored to help the Black Knights secure 43 total points.
Like the 200 IM, Army also had crucial success in the 1M Dive. Minh Donnell led the way with a second-place finish after racking up a score of 272.30, while Acacia Chai and Abigail Gibbs finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the final race of the night, the Cadets were able to collect yet another set of medals from a relay as the team of Lauren Carag, Migault, Cole and Sammie Edwards' time of 3:40.64 landed them at second overall.
