NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Army men's swimming and diving team suffered its first defeat of the season following a 172-127 loss to Columbia, a member of the Ivy League, Friday afternoon at Percy Uris Natatorium.
The Lions (1-0), making their home and season debut, jumped out to a quick lead en-route to capturing 10 of the 16 events in snapping Army's four-meet win streak. Freshman Brice Barrieault and sophomore Owen Harlow were double winners for the Black Knights.
Columbia opened the meet dominating both the one and three-meter boards, then jumped out to a handful of wins in the swimming events.
The Black Knights (4-1) won the second event of the meet when Barrieault led a sweep in the 1000-yard freestyle as he beat the field in a time of 9:23.00. Following him across were Ian Tansill (9:25.27) and Clayton Bernauer (9:34.14).
The Lions, who won the opening 200-yard medley relay, responded by winning the next four events (200 free, 100 back, 100 breast and 200 fly) before Harlow won captured two of the next three.
He bested the field in the 50 and 100 free events, sandwiched around the one-meter board, out-touching Columbia's Zion James both times. Harlow won the shorter 50 in a time 20.17 to James' 20.90. Following the diving event, Harlow was back in the pool besting James in the longer 100 free with his time of 44.59.
Barrieault won his second event, the 500 free, leading an Army sweep with his winning time of 4:34.94. Wes Tate was second (4:36.16) followed by Tansill (4:37.40).
Army went one-two in the 200 IM led by Sam Wesley (1:53.99) and Alex Edwards (1:55.88) before claiming the final 400 free relay in a time of 3:02.40.
Also posting runner-up honors were Tanner Falls (1:40.81) in the 200 free, Evan Yoo, 200 breast (1:59.90) and George Glover VII, 100 fly (51.61). The Black Knights took second in the 200 IM (1:30.55).
Coach's Corner
"Our team took on a very talented and well coached Columbia team this afternoon. After earning a historic win over Columbia last season in our pool, they were ready for us and got their revenge. They controlled the meet from start to finish. Despite the final score, our team hung in there and competed hard. That's a tough pool to compete in and we are in the midst of a very intense training block - I'm proud of how our team took it one event at a time and kept fighting and focusing on executing race details despite an off day for us as a team. I was very impressed with how David Manelis handled a very tough Columbia diving squad and had a big bounce back meet for the team. Owen Harlow and Brice Barrieault swam great, and each walked away with two big wins for the team. We purposely build a very tough, challenging competition schedule that requires us to bring our best to each meet and if we are off a little bit, we pay the price. Hats off to Columbia for competing well, I'm excited to see how they do the rest of the season. Overall, we learned a lot today and it was good for our team to deal with some adversity as we head into our mid-season meet at the NC State (swim) and West Virginia (dive) Invites." -Head Coach Brandt Nigro
