WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's and women's swimming teams romped to victories over Seton Hall Friday afternoon at Crandall Pool. The men captured 12 of 14 events, including sweeps in four straight events, in defeating the Pirates, 183-79. The women were just as dominate, claiming wins in all but one of 14 events, en-route to a 163-95 decision.
The Men's Meet
Army claimed the first five events, with a sweep of the top three places in the 1000 free and 50 free, along with one-two finishes in the 200-medley relay, the 200 free plus the 100 breaststroke, before Seton Hall snapped that streak in claiming the 200 butterfly. Brice Barrieault (9:26.7), Evan Yoo and CJ Bernauer led a sweep in the 1000 free, Alex Edwards (1:40.72) and Sean Dwyer went one-two in the 200 free, Jacob Powell won the 100 back (50.45), Kohen Rankin (54.83) and Ryan Durkan followed each other across in the 100 breaststroke.
The Black Knights answered back with another run, claiming the next five events with sweeps. Army won the first four starting with William Rankin (20.71) touching first in the 50 free, collecting his first collegiate win. Owen Harlow (44.59) leading the charge in the 100 free, Zac Leith (1:50.28) first in the 200 backstroke and Yoo crossing in the 200 breast (1:59.61). Ian Tansill was first in the 500 free (4:32.44) before Seton Hall claimed its final victory in the 100 fly.
Edwards won his second individual event in beating the field in the 200 IM (1:52.50) with Army's win in the final 400 freestyle relay behind the quartet of Tanner Falls, William Rankin, Powell and Nathan Jao (3:01.94). Members on the opening 200 medley relay (1:31.16) were Billy Kim, Ryan Durkan, Jackson Pogue and Owen Harlow.
The Women's Meet
Just as prevailing as the men, the women claimed the first seven events before the Pirates captured their lone win in the 100 free. Multiple winners were Layne Peterson, Aurelie Migault and Meghan Cole who had a hand in three events with Clara Williams and Meghan Cole following with two.
Peterson, Migault and Cole swam legs on the opening 200 medley relay (1:46.92) as Army went one-two in that event. Peterson claimed both backstroke events, taking the 100 in 57.75 and the longer 200 (2:01.94). Migault doubled in the breaststroke (1:04.83 in the 100) and later led a one-two sweep in the longer 200 (2:18.13). Cole was first in the 50 free (23.50) and 100 fly (55.93). Williams won the 200 and 500 free, with Zhang leading a one-two finish in the 200 fly along with swimming a leg on the final 400 free relay.

Coach's Corner: "So proud of the team and the way they performed tonight from start to finish. We've been working on being better and more aggressive in the front part of the meet and our team did just that tonight. Both our women and men went 1-2 in the opening relay and then backed that up with wins in the 1000 - that's something we haven't done in a long time, especially against a very competitive and well coach Seton Hall team.
We still have lots of little details to work on and some race strategies adjustments that we can make, but overall, I like how the team is racing and getting better each week. But as I told the team tonight at end, tomorrow we wake up and having a great workout is all that matters. We have a very tough BC team coming to town in 2 weeks and we need to be ready for them! And even though there are so many I could point to as having great performances, hats off to Clara Williams and Will Rankin on having such a huge night.
Clara performed awesome in all 3 of her races and really set the tone for our ladies. And, Will finally earned his first collegiate win tonight. He's been so focused, hardworking, and patiently tenacious since his plebe year and I'm so proud of him!" -Head Coach Brandt Nigro
Cadet's Corner: Will Rankin on tonight's meet:
"I was really impressed with the team's performance in the middle of a challenging training block. A lot of guys stepped up and competed exceptionally well even when fatigued. We have identified a lot of ways we can clean up the swims and will continue to be working on those details into the next few weeks. We are on the right trajectory and need to maintain focus on energy into future competitions."
Clara Williams thoughts on tonight's meet:
"I think all of the women can agree that during previous dual meets we've always sought to break free from the shadow of the men's team. That is exactly what happened tonight. Race after race, the Army team was on top nearly every time, but most importantly, the energy of the room was fixed on our side of the pool. The electricity on deck gave me goosebumps and the pride I feel for this team is almost unimaginable. This season is truly the one where the world will see something special from Army swim and dive."
