Army Splits a Pair of Pitchers' Duels

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Army West Point softball team split its Sunday doubleheader with Holy Cross in a pair of pitching duels. The Cadets dropped the first contest 2-1, but claimed the second 1-0.

In the second game, Alicyn Grete took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but it was broken up by Holy Cross's Bailey Chavez with two outs. The sophomore from Niceville, Fla., finished the day with a two-hit shutout and struck out nine batters. This was the fewest hits she's allowed in a complete game in her career and is her second complete-game shutout.

Grete and Holy Cross pitcher Kelly Nelson dueled it out for the entirety of the game. Entering the sixth inning, Nelson had only allowed four hits.

Army got three hits in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with just one out. Though, Nelson and the Crusaders were able to get out of the jam to keep it a scoreless affair.

The Black Knights were finally able to get a run on the board in the top of the seventh with Julianna LaRusso coming around to score on an error by Holy Cross's second baseman to make it 1-0.

Grete struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win for Army.

In the first contest, Holy Cross got on the board early in the first contest with Bella Jankowski hitting a 2 RBI single out to left field.

Following the first inning of play, Jolie Duong did not allow another hit. She issued a leadoff walk in the second, but retired the remaining 15 batters she faced. The Houston native allowed just two hits and two earned runs in 6.0 innings of work.

Army got a run on the board in the bottom of the third with Taylor Livingston tagging up on Kayla Edwards sac fly to left field to make it 2-1.

The Black Knights had a runner on third with two outs in the top of the seventh, but could not bring a run around to score.
