Black Knights Late Rally Comes Up Short at BU
May 13, 2021 | Softball
BOSTON – The Army West Point softball team's rally came up just short in the opening game of the Patriot League championship. The fourth-seed Black Knights fell to top-seeded Boston University in the double elimination tournament Thursday afternoon at the BU Softball Field, 5-4.
Â
The Terriers bats were hot early, as BU, which received votes in the USA TODAY/NFCA Coaches poll, put up four runs in the first inning. Army pitcher Jolie Duong settled in from there allowing just two hits and no runs over the next four innings.
Â
Army's leadoff hitters registered a hit all but one inning, but the Cadets could not get a run on the board until the sixth inning.
Â
The Black Knights loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with no outs. After fouling off several pitches, Madi Gilmore brought in Army's first run of the day after being hit by a pitch. In the next at bat, Taylor Drayton singled up the middle, which brought home Ally Snelling. Leila Hurst singled through the left side to score Duong and cut Army's deficit to one run. The Terriers, however, were able to record three consecutive outs to escape the inning with the 4-3 lead.
Â
BU got a run back in the bottom of the sixth to head to the seventh with the two-run lead.
Â
Kayla Edwards led off the seventh inning with a solo shot over the fence in left center field. The homer was her second of the season and cut BU's lead to 5-4. Though, the Terriers were able to put away the next three batters to pick up the win.

NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
- Edwards, Drayton and Duong each recorded multi-hit games.
- This was just Duong's third loss in the circle. The second team all-league selection is 9-3 on the season.
- The Black Knights put three runs up on BU starting pitcher Ali DuBois, a three-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Year.
- Three earned runs is tied for the most DuBois has permitted in a contest this season. The senior has only allowed three earned in three games, two of which were to Army.
- This was just the fourth time this season that BU allowed four runs in a game. Two of those instances were to Army.
