Army Splits Doubleheader in First Day at Clearwater

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- This win marked the 499th of Army head coach Cheryl Milligan's career. She brought with her to Army an overall record of 490-148 in her 15 seasons at the helm of the Tufts program.
- The win also represented Army's fourth consecutive victory.
- Taylor Drayton was a single away from hitting for the cycle.
- The junior from Clayton, N.C., blasted her third homer of the season and the 11th of her career.
- Drayton is now up to eight extra-base hits on the season.
- Megan Muffett matched her career high with four runs batted in, which she previously did against St. Francis (Pa.) on March 10, 2019.
- A total of 10 different players registered hits in the win, with four different Black Knights having multi-hit games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cadets wasted no time getting runs up on the board with a pair in the top half of the first. With the bases loaded, Emily Ballesteros was hit by a pitch, which brought in Jolie Duong to score. Ally Snelling would score in the next at bat, as Muffett drew a walk.
- In the top of the second inning it was the Army bats that got the job done. The Cadets scored six runs in the inning, with four coming before there was an out recorded.
- Duong scored Brook Mitchell with an RBI single to make the score 3-0. Then, Duong and Grete would come around to score on a 2 RBI double from Drayton.
- Madi Gilmore sent home Drayton with an RBI double of her own, which made it 6-0 in favor of Army.
- The Black Knights added two more before the inning expired with RBI singles from Muffett and Taylor Livingston, giving Army the 8-0 lead.
- Drayton made it a nine-run lead in the top of the third with a two-out solo shot.
- Though the Rattlers came storming back in the bottom half of the inning with six runs to whittle Army's lead down to three.
- The Black Knights added some insurance runs back in the top of the fifth that would prove to be necessary. Muffett had a 2 RBI double that scored Leila Hurst and Brooke Tuttle to make the score 11-6.
- The Rattlers again responded in the bottom of the fifth. This time Florida A&M got its two runs back to cut Army's lead back to three.
- After the Cadets went down in order in the top of the sixth, Florida A&M cut the Black Knights' lead to 11-9 in the bottom of the sixth.
- After a leadoff triple from Drayton to start the seventh, Tuttle dropped a base knock to bring her in and make the score 12-9.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Alicyn Grete extended her hit streak to 13 games with her fifth multi-hit performance of the season.
- The freshman from Niceville, Fla., has also scored a run in Army's last six games.
- Ballesteros rounded the bases for the ninth time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights jumped to an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first two innings.
- Army got on the board in the bottom of the first with Grete crossing the plate after Taylor Drayton reached base with on an error with one out.
- Army added another run in the bottom of the second. The Black Knights managed to load the bases with one out. Ballesteros, who led off the inning with a walk, came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Cadets the two-run lead.
- Seton Hall answered back in the top of the third with a three-run homer from Baylee Allender to give the Pirates the lead.
- After a scoreless fourth inning, Seton Hall had a monstrous 10-run inning in the top of the fifth to set itself up for the win.
UP NEXT
- Army will resume action with a pair of games on Saturday. First, the Black Knights will square off with Bowling Green at 9 a.m. and then they will take on Yale at 11:30 a.m.
