Milligan Earns 500th Career Win; Army Splits Doubleheader

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Army West Point softball coach Cheryl Milligan picked up her 500th career win with Army's 6-3 victory in the back end of its doubleheader at the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational on Saturday. Army fell in its first game in a tight 3-2 decision to Bowling Green.
Milligan brought with her to West Point an overall record of 490-148 in her 15 seasons at the helm of the Tufts program.

ARMY NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
- Madi Gilmore was 3-for-4 at the plate and had 2 RBIs.
- Three hits is a new career high for the sophomore from Rosamond, Calif.
- Gilmore has sent in 10 runs this season, which is tied for the fourth most RBIs on the team.
- Alicyn Grete extended her hit-streak to 14 games.
- In three innings on the mound, Emily Iannotti registered four strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army got on the board in top of the first inning with a 2 RBI single from Gilmore, that scored Grete and Jolie Duong.
- After two shutout innings from Macey Newbary on the mound, the Falcons eventually answered back in the bottom of the third with three runs.
- Bowling Green had runners in scoring position with one out when Nikki Sorgi cleared the bases with a 2 RBI double that evened the game at two apiece. Sorgi would eventually go on to score what proved to be the winning run.
- The Cadets made things interesting in the top of the seventh with Brooke Tuttle advancing to third off a Gilmore single with two outs. Though, Yale's Payton Gottshall was able to retire the next Army batter to capture her ninth win on the mound this season.
GAME 2: ARMY 6, YALE 3
ARMY NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS
- Grete picked up her third win of the season, pitching all seven innings and allowing just three earned runs.
- At the plate, Grete was 2-for-2, which extended her hit-streak to 15 games. She's now had six multi-hit games this season.
- Ally Snelling also had two RBIs to improve her season total to 18, which leads the team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yale opened the scoring in the top of the first with Annie Tarte scoring on an RBI double from Giovy Webb.
- Army countered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
- Snelling got things going with a 2 RBI single to center that scored Taylor Drayton and Grete to make the score 2-1 in favor of Army. The Cadets added two more runs with Snelling and Gilmore scoring on an error by the left fielder to go up 4-1.
- Grete helped her cause on the mound in the top of the fourth by hitting a two-run homer.
- Yale got runs back in the fifth and sixth, but Grete and the Black Knights were able to hold off any hopes of a comeback for the Bulldogs.

- The Black Knights will take on Robert Morris at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
