Softball Drops Opening Two Games in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Army West Point softball fell in both of its games in its first day at the Charleston Invitational. The Black Knights (5-7) were on the wrong side of an 8-4 decision in their first contest of the day against Ohio then later fell to No. 24 Virginia Tech, 8-3.

The Black Knights continue with day two of action at the Charleston Invitational. Army plays Dartmouth at 10 a.m. and NC Central at 12:15 p.m. Both games will be played at Charleston Southern University.
GAME 1: OHIO 8, ARMY 4
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Alicyn Grete registered her third multi-hit game of the season.
- One of the freshman's hits was a triple, which marked her second three-bagger of the season.
- Ally Snelling continued her hot start to the season with batting 2-for-4 at the plate.
- Brook Mitchell logged her fourth multi-hit game.
- Jolie Duong got the start on the mound and went 4.0 innings allowing two earned runs.
- The Bobcats (3-8) jumped to an early 2-0 lead after scoring two runs in the top half of the first. Both runs were unearned.
- Army responded in the bottom of the third with three runs to take the lead. Emily Ballesteros brought home Grete and moved Snelling to third on a bunt. In the next at bat, Megan Muffett scored Snelling on a sacrifice fly out to right field. Ballesteros later came around to score off an RBI single up the middle from Kelsey Taylor to give the Cadets the lead.
- However, the Bobcats quickly surged back and regained the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs to push ahead 5-3.
- Army got one run back in the bottom of the sixth with Grete's triple out to center field, which scored Taylor Livingston.
- Ohio answered back in the top of the seventh with another three-run inning to take the 8-4 advantage.
GAME 2: VIRGINIA TECH 8, ARMY 3

- Ballesteros had notched an RBI in the contest, to mark her third straight game bringing home a runner.
- Grete extended her hit streak to eight games.
- Livingston scored her 10th run of the season.
- Virginia Tech (9-3) scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Black Knights got one back in the bottom half of the inning. Snelling reached on an error by the right fielder and Mitchell came around to score to make the score 2-1.
- The Hokies quickly added to their lead with two runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth to go ahead a 6-1.
- Army got one run back in bottom of the fifth with Livingston crossing the plate after Mitchell reached on an error by the short stop to cut Virginia Tech's advantage to four runs.
- Duong scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ballesteros in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 6-3.
- Though, the Hokies once again had an answer with two runs in the top of the seventh to push their lead back to five.
