Cadets Fall to Marist on the Road

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 7/9 Army West Point men's lacrosse team suffered a 17-9 setback to Hudson Valley rival Marist on the road Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Foxes pulled away from the Black Knights thanks to an 8-0 scoring run.
Brendan Nichtern eclipsed the 100-career point milestone in today's game thanks to four assists. The sophomore is the youngest player to reach the milestone in the program's 103-year history.
Miles Silva kept the team fighting with five goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Foxes came out aggressive in the first quarter to give the Black Knights their first scoring deficit of the season.
- Silva scored the first goal of the contest off an assist from Connor DeWitt to put the Cadets up 1-0.
- Marist answered back with two consecutive goals though to take a 2-1 lead.
- Nicholas Garofano netted his first of the year to knot things up a 2-2 before the Red Foxes and Silva for the Black Knights traded goals yet again.
- The Red Foxes then scored two straight, but a scoop and score from Silva kept it a one-point game.
- Marist tallied a goal to close out the quarter which sparked an 8-0 run through the third to go up 13-4 on Army.
- Nichtern got things going for Army with 4:13 to go in the third with assists to Matt Manown and Silva, while Jacob Morin found the back of the net off a pass from DeWitt for a man-up score.
- Two more Marist goals put the game at 15-7 with Army still trailing.
- Nichtern assisted on back-to-back Army goals spaced 40 seconds apart by Silva and Sean O'Brien, but the Red Foxes sealed the game with two more scores to end things with a 17-9 advantage.
HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Silva posted a season-high five goals, while Nichtern finished the day with four assists.
- Silva recorded a hat trick within the first 11-minutes of action today.
- The senior has notched the eighth hat trick in his career.
- Nichtern now totals 65 assists in his career and 102 points.
- The sophomore is the youngest Cadet to join the 100-point club in Army's 103-year history.
- His 102-career points rank him 31st all-time, while he improves to 13th in career assists with 65.
- Thanks to his four helpers today, Nichtern passed Eric Waltz '93, Bob Miser '60 and Bob Bletchley '88 who each totaled 64 assists.
- Manown and DeWitt recorded multi-point games today as well.
- Marcus Hudgins, Liam Davenport and Bennett Taylor led the team with two caused turnovers apiece.
- Hudgins had a career day with eight ground balls, while Tom Rigney added five.
- Wyatt Schupler made 10 saves in net for Army.
- Despite being outscored by Marist, Army held an advantage in shots (45-38), ground balls (38-36) and caused turnovers (9-7).
- The Black Knights had a better clear percentage (92%-77%) as well as having fewer turnovers (16-19).
