Black Knights Drop Home Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's rugby team kicked off its 2019-20 15s campaign Friday night versus Trinity College Dublin at the Anderson Rugby Complex.
The Black Knights were defeated 48-0 by the visitors from Ireland.
The first half saw back-and-forth tough play from both sides, with Army pushing themselves into the Trinity defense early. The opening score came on a speedy run down the sideline by Trinity in the 15th minute to take a 5-0 lead.
Two more tries would come before the break for the visitors, as Trinity pressed the Black Knight defense heading into halftime.
Army had a steady rotation of players cycling into the game throughout the second half, giving head coach Matt Sherman a good look at his roster in the opening contest of the year.
Trinity would score five times in the final 40 minutes to cap off the 48-0 win.

- Army men's rugby begins its sixth year in 2019 as a varsity program at the United States Military Academy.
- This is the fifth season for head coach Matt Sherman.
- The Black Knights are coming off a Rugby East Championship in 2018-19.
- Trinity College boasts the oldest rugby club in continuous existence in the world, having played the sport from its inception in 1854.
- Trinity College also played Navy and Penn State during its tour of the United States.
