Army Takes Second at Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – For the seventh straight year, the Army West Point men's swimming and diving team concluded the four-day Patriot League Championships with a second-place finish.
The Black Knights finished with 781.5 points, beating their total of 780.5 from a season ago. Army took second behind Navy (1037.5), while Bucknell rounded out the top-three with 397 points. Boston U. (376), Lehigh (330), Loyola (277), American (154), Lafayette (126), Holy Cross (97) and Colgate (78) followed.
Brian McKenrick was Army's top individual scorer at the championships with 51 points, which was good for third, while Evan Zhang's 49 points made him the eight-best individual scorer at his first league championships.

"I'm not much for moral victories, but winning three of five relays with Academy record times was a lot of fun," head coach Mickey Wender said. "Our team is young and very eager to get to the next level. It was a fun weekend on all accounts."

Several Cadets will trek down to Annapolis, Md., next weekend for the three-day ECAC Championships beginning on March 1 at Lejeune Hall.

ARMY NOTABLES
- The final day began with a third-place finish in the 1650 free by Tom Ottman at 15:15.87. Kevin Lin also finished inside the top-five after posting a time of 15:35.75, which was good for fifth.
- Army had a solid scoring outing in the 200 back after Tyler Kim (1:45.48), McKenrick (1:47.40) and Jay Yang (1:48.58) placed fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively.
- With four Cadets in the A-Final of the 100 free, the Black Knights capitalized on the scoring opportunity. Nathan Hein won the event at 43.77, tying the Academy record set back in 2015 by Chris Szekely.
- The junior was not the only one to place inside the top-three though as Kevin Doo came in third at 44.29. Billy Webber followed Doo in fourth at 44.64, while Josh Zock rounded out the field with a time of 45.36.
- In the 200 breast, it was Zhang coming away with the win at 1:55.65. He set an Academy and plebe record, previously held by Ty Dang in 2016.
- James Bilbrey wrapped up the individual events for the Black Knights with a fifth-place finish in the 200 fly with his time of 1:48.57.
- The league championships came to a close once Hein, Doo, Webber and Brandon McCredie set an Academy and pool record in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:55.66.
