Black Knights Hang Tough Against Ohio State, Oregon

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Army West Point softball team fell to Ohio State, 4-0, and #17 Oregon, 11-0, at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Friday. Â

The Black Knights dropped to 4-9 on the season, while the Buckeyes moved to 5-4 on the year. The Ducks improved to 9-3 in 2019 with their victory.

Army hung tough against the Buckeyes, matching their pitching and defense by keeping OSU off the board until a grand slam in the sixth inning. In the following game, the Cadets limited the 17th-ranked team in the nation to just two hits through the first three innings and were within striking distance on offense as well.

Junior Emily Ballesteros reached base four times on the afternoon for the Black Knights out of the leadoff spot with a hit and three walks. Senior Carrie Reilly notched two hits against the Ducks for her third multi-hit effort of the year. Rookie Jolie Duong continues to impress early in her career, tossing 165 pitches in 7.1 innings of work in the circle. The Houston, Texas native struck out five batters on the day.

- The two sides were in the midst of a pitcher's duel as they combined for two hits and nine walks through the first five-and-a-half-innings.
- Kaitlyn Coffman provided the big blast for Ohio State, connecting on the first pitch of her sixth inning at-bat with the bases loaded for a grand slam.Â

- This was the second meeting between Army and Ohio State following a game in 2017.
- Ballesteros saw her 11-game hit streak snapped.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Ducks got out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, although the Black Knights pitching staff did not allow a hit.
- Reilly led off the second inning with the Black Knights' first hit of the game.
- Oregon broke the game open in the fourth inning with six runs on six hits to put the game out of reach.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- This was the first-ever meeting between Army and Oregon.
- Ballesteros has reached base in the last 12 games.
- The Chino Hills, Calif., native and Reilly are tied for the team lead with 13 hits.

- The Black Knights return to action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday by resuming the game against UC Santa Barbara in the fifth inning at 4:30 p.m. ET.
