WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point football team's comeback bid fell short against San Jose State as the Black Knights were defeated, 34-29, on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.

Army (3-5) logged 429 yards of total offense against the Spartans (4-4), with 326 coming on the ground. Christian Anderson, who entered the game in the third quarter, made an immediate impact and finished as the leading rusher with two touchdowns and 87 yards on 16 carries. Sandon McCoy also found pay dirt and finished his afternoon with 39 yards on 13 totes.

Kelvin Hopkins totaled a team-best 50 yards through the air with a passing touchdown, while Camden Harrison led the team with 54 receiving yards and a touchdown on four receptions.

On the defensive end, Javhari Bourdeau paced the way with a team-high six tackles. Ryan Velez, Elijah Riley and Arik Smith combined for 12 stops after each came away with four. Riley also performed well in pass protection, tying his career-high mark of three pass breakups.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Spartans opened the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Josh Love to Isaiah Hamilton on the game's first drive. The score put San Jose State ahead 7-0 with 11:44 left in the first quarter.
The Black Knights responded on the ensuing drive with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Hopkins to Harrison. The junior wideout broke two tackles en route to the end zone. The connection evened the score at 7-7 with 1:59 remaining in the opening quarter.
San Jose State came right back with a 30-yard field goal from Matt Mercurio with 14:42 remaining in the second quarter that gave the Spartans a 10-7 advantage.
After an Army fumble at its own 44-yard line, San Jose State needed just four plays to get into the end zone. The drive was capped off by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Love to Kaire Robinson that made it a 17-7 game with 11:36 left in the first half.
The Spartans extended their lead on their following drive with a 23-yard field goal from Mercurio with 5:37 remaining in the second quarter.
The Black Knights added a 41-yard field goal with 52 seconds remaining in the first half to cut the Spartans' lead to 10, 20-10.
San Jose State quickly answered right before the half ended by connecting on a 38-yard field goal with two seconds left.
To open the second half, the Cadets scored after marching the ball 75 yards down the field on 13 plays. McCoy plunged into the end zone from four yards out with 8:09 remaining in the third to trim the deficit to six, 23-17.
San Jose State made it a two-score game seven seconds into the fourth quarter with Love finding Bailey Gather in the back of the end zone. The Spartans added a two-point conversion to grab a 31-17 advantage.
Army answered on the following drive to make it a one-possession game once again. Malik Hancock darted for a 28-yard rush and a San Jose State penalty gave the Black Knights the ball on the Spartans' one-yard line. From there, Anderson punched it in with 8:42 left in the contest. The Black Knights were unsuccessful on the point after attempt, which put the score at 31-23.
Mercurio drilled his fourth field goal of the day for the Spartans, connecting on a 27-yard field goal with 3:48 left in the contest to extend the lead back to double-digits, 34-23, for the Spartans.
Army had one last charge and Anderson scored on a 33-yard keeper with 31 seconds remaining in the contest to cut the Spartans lead to five, 34-29.
