WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point head track and field coach Mike Smith announced the team's 2018-19 indoor and outdoor schedules on Wednesday.Â
"We try to set up a schedule that provides our team with good competitive opportunities that provide a balance between our development dual meet people and our high level competitors," Smith said.
"Indoors, we have several meets on the schedule that allow us to get a good look at everyone on our team," Smith said. "Our goals are always to compete well at the Army-Navy dual, the conference meet and the NCAA Championships so we have to balance the needs of a variety of levels of athletes in order to accomplish those goals."
Army will square off with Navy in the annual Star Meet on Feb. 2 at Gillis Field House.
"The dual meet is a unique competition in collegiate track and field and one not to miss for those interested in the drama of team scored competition," Smith said. "The atmosphere is high energy and does not disappoint."
The team closes out the regular season at the FastTrack Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y., on Feb. 8, before heading into the championship season.
"By the time we get to the start of outdoor track we have a full body of work from the indoor season in which to evaluate how people fit into the competitive outlook of the teams." Smith stated.
The outdoor season opens with three events in California, beginning with the Occidental Distance Carnival on March 8 in Los Angeles. The schedule is filled with several events aimed at challenging and evaluating the roster heading toward the championship season.
"Our team is larger than most," Smith said. "So we prioritize going to meets where we can compete the vast majority of the team in order to evaluate as many people as possible going into the championship season."
The outdoor slate is highlighted by the team's meet with Navy on April 6 in Annapolis and the West Point Twilight on May 9, an exciting event that Smith described as "designed to produce big marks and fast times."
