BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After an impressive showing at the Penn State National Open, Army West Point thrower Matthew Palchak was named the Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Palchak, a sophomore from Davis, Calif., finished seventh in the men's shot put with a mark of 17.71m, which is the top mark in the Patriot League by 0.43m. The distance is also fifth in program history.
"In his second year at West Point, Matt has grown into a consistent and dependable competitor," Assistant Track Coach Brian Woodbury said. "He is fearless when he steps into the ring and only gets better when faced with high level competition. He has developed into a cornerstone athlete for our program and has a very bright future ahead for Army Throws."
This is Palchak's second weekly award this season, after he was named the Field Athlete of the Week on Dec. 9.
Palchak and the Black Knights are back in action this Saturday in Annapolis, Md., for the Army-Navy Star Meet, which is part of the Star Series presented by USAA. Competition is set to kick off at 11 a.m. for the men and approximately 2:30 p.m. for the women.
