Army West Point Athletics
Army Falls, 2-1, in OT to Fairfield
September 18, 2018 | Men's Soccer
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A penalty kick goal in the 92nd minute sealed a 2-1 victory for Fairfield over the Army West Point men's soccer team on Tuesday night at a foggy Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.
With a heavy fog hovering over a wet playing surface, both sides struggled to generate many quality scoring chances throughout the early portion of the contest. However, the Stags (3-3) were able to come away with the win in their home opener despite being outshot 8-7 by the Black Knights (3-3-1).
Keenan O'Shea was responsible for the game-tying score for Army in the final seconds of regulation, putting one past the Fairfield goalkeeper to force an overtime period.
"I'm extremely proud of this team tonight," head coach Russell Payne said. "This is the kind of group I love to coach. We've been less than full strength for a while now but yet our spirit is so strong and we're finding ways to stay in games, push through and gut things out through tough circumstances. I can't ask for anything more. We'll focus on tightening up in a few areas and I know we'll be ready for Lehigh this weekend."
