Men’s Soccer Falls to Lafayette in First Round of Patriot League Tournament

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team came up just short in the First Round of the Patriot League Tournament, falling 1-0 to Lafayette at Malek Stadium on Saturday night.
Army finishes the season with a 7-6-5 record. Saturday marked the first time since 2022 that Army played in the Patriot League Tournament. Lafayette (7-6-5) advances to the semifinals, where it will take on American.
For 85 minutes, neither team could find the back of the net but with 5:44 left in regulation, Oliver Gordon scored the game-winning goal for the Leopards.
It was a quiet opening 45 minutes, with neither team generating much on the offensive side of the field. Army had four shots in the half, including two of the foot of Jack De Simone. Kelly Cooper and Jubril Bamgbala also added shots. Lafayette had the only shot on goal in the half, but Michael Guiry made the save.
The offense picked up a bit in the second half, as Army generated two shots on goal, one by De Simone and Bamgbala but neither found the twine. The Leopards also had two shots on goal in the final 45 minutes, with Guiry making one stop.
Gordon's goal in the 85th minute was a perfect strike from outside the box, finding the top left corner of the net. Both of Army's second-half shots came following the Leopard's goal.
Goalkeeper Eric Axtman moves to 7-6-5 on the season for Lafayette, while Guiry finishes the year at 7-3-4 for Army.
Army's eight seven wins are the most in a season since it won eight in 2022. Bamgbala, Cooper, De Simone and Jack Meyer all earned spots on the Patriot League All-Conference Team. The four All-Conference players were the most for an Army team since it had six in 2022.
