Army Finishes Season at Patriot League Tournament

BOSTON – The 2018 season came to a close for the Army West Point softball team on the second day of the Patriot League Tournament after falling to Lehigh, 3-0, at the Boston University Softball Field.

The fourth-seeded Black Knights (26-28) and third-seeded Mountain Hawks (23-25-1) were locked into a pitching duel for the majority of the contest, but Lehigh prevailed in the sixth with three runs.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

Swafford tallied her eighth double and 10th extra-base hit of the year.
It was also the 40th hit of her sophomore season.
Taylor Livingston recorded her first Patriot League Tournament hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the bottom of the first frame, Lehigh had two runners in scoring position with one out. A grounder was chopped to Livingston at short and she fired home to cut down the runner from third at the plate, denying the score. Newbary then fanned the final batter of the inning to escape any trouble.
From that point, Newbary settled in and retired 13 of the next 14 Lehigh batters over the course of four scoreless innings.
In the sixth, Lehigh put runners on second and third, and Courtney Springman came on in relief of Newbary. After issuing a walk and loading the bases, the ensuing batter was hit by a pitch and the first run of the game crossed to put Lehigh up 1-0. Springman picked up a timely strikeout for the second out of the inning, but a two-RBI single plated two more Mountain Hawk runs.
Those three runs turned out to be the difference as Army was retired in order in the seventh.
