Cadets Capture Win in Series Finale

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Army West Point softball team captured a 3-2 Patriot League win over Holy Cross in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Freshman Field.
The Black Knights (21-23, 6-6 Patriot League) and Crusaders (11-26, 4-8 Patriot League) were both limited to five hits apiece. For Army, Carrie Reilly had the most success, tallying a pair of base knocks in four at-bats.
In the circle, Macey Newbary came on in relief for Courtney Springman in the third and earned the win. She fanned three and gave up just two runs on four hits in five innings of work.

- Lacey Swafford tallied a hit for the eighth straight game.
- It was the seventh time this season that the Black Knights stole multiple bases in a single game.
- Amelia Trotter stole her 11th base of the season and is a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts.
- Kristen McPeek and Izzy Gates each picked up a hit for the third consecutive game.

- In the second, Reilly ripped a leadoff double into the gap in right center. McPeek then reached on a Crusader fielding error before stealing second to put two Cadets in scoring position with no outs. Taylor Drayton was due up next and she lifted a ball to deep left for a sacrifice fly to put Army ahead 1-0.
- The Black Knights added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth. With one out, Reilly and McPeek notched back-to-back singles and Army had runners on the corners once Reilly tagged up on a Drayton fly out. A run was then plated after Gates shot an RBI single into left. McPeek advanced to third on the Gates base knock and later came in to score on a passed ball to extend Army's lead to three, 3-0.
- The Crusaders countered with a pair of runs of their own in the home half of the fourth to pull within one.
- Army's one-run lead ultimately held though, despite Holy Cross threatening in the seventh by getting a runner to third in the inning.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights will travel to West Hartford, Conn., on Wednesday for a non-conference midweek doubleheader against Hartford starting at 2:30 p.m.
