Jacksonville-Bound Cadets to Open Season on Friday

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point softball team will begin its 2018 campaign in the Sunshine State this weekend as the Black Knights take part in the three-day River City Leadoff in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Cadets will open their season with a pair of Friday games against UConn at 10:30 a.m. and Jacksonville State at 1 p.m. Army will return to the field the following day for a 1 p.m. showdown with Jacksonville State before taking on Jacksonville at 6 p.m.

The weekend will come to a close at 10 a.m. on Sunday when the Black Knights meet the Huskies one final time.

The Black Knights were picked to finish third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll.
Junior Renee Poirier and sophomore Lacey Swafford received Preseason All-Patriot League Team honors.
Army is coming off a 36-21 season that included a 10-8 mark in league play.
16 Cadets return, while the squad welcomes 10 newcomers to the roster.
The Black Knights are 0-4 against UConn and 0-3 against Jacksonville State all-time.
The game against Jacksonville will be the first meeting between Army and the Dolphins.

UCONN (0-0)

The Huskies were chosen to place seventh in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.
UConn finished the 2017 slate with a 17-31 record.
The roster features a lot of young talent with 16 underclassmen to go with three seniors and a pair of juniors.

JACKSONVILLE STATE (0-0)

Jacksonville State was picked to win the Ohio Valley Conference for the third straight year.
The Gamecocks made the NCAA Tournament last year after finishing the season with a 41-12 overall record to pair with a 15-1 conference mark.
The team is upperclassmen dominant with 13 juniors and seniors to go along with a pair of sophomores and three rookies.

JACKSONVILLE (0-0)

The Dolphins finished the 2017 season with a 30-25 mark and played to an 8-2 record in Atlantic Sun play.
Jacksonville returns four All-Conference players from last year's squad.
The Dolphins were chosen to place sixth in the conference preseason coaches' poll.
