Softball's Explosive Offense, Strong Defense Leads to Saturday Sweep of Texas A&M-CC, Tarleton State
February 21, 2026 | Softball
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Army West Point softball (5-8) used high-powered offense and lock-down defense to sweep their Texas foes, run-ruling both Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders (3-10), 8-0, and tournament host, the Tarleton State Texans (10-5), 10-0.
On the day, the Black Knights combined for 18 runs and 22 hits, nine hits coming against the Islanders and 13 hits coming against the Texans, finishing two games with a .458 on-base percentage, a .407 batting average and a .556 slugging percentage.
Meanwhile, defensively, only four batters in total got on base against Army in the two games, allowing three walks and a hit-by-pitch, not allowing a single run or hit, with opponents totaling a .000 batting average and a .114 on-base percentage.
Sienna Tepley and Taylor Brown led the way offensively with four hits each, with Tepley earning two RBI and a double and Brown adding two RBI of her own and a triple. Caitlyn Newburn was right behind them with three hits and totaled a team-high four RBI on the day.
Seven more Black Knights added hits for Army throughout the day. Hannah Laub added three hits, Sam Rodgers and Ashton White added two hits, plus Annie Christiana, Micaela Garcia, Emma Murchison and Maisi Sigler added one hit apiece.
Amanda Eaglin and Breanna Izzo highlighted the pitching unit for the Black Knights, both earning starts, five-inning no-hitters in both games and wins on the day.
In Eaglin's no-hitter, she faced 16 batters, only letting one on in the first inning with a hit-by-pitch and adding one strikeout. Meanwhile, in Izzo's matchup against the Texans, she faced 19 batters, striking out seven of them while allowing three walks.
GAME 1
Just like the day before against Tulsa, the Black Knights struck immediately at the top of the first inning.
Sienna Tepley set the tone with a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. After Taylor Brown also walked and Ashton White advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, Brianna Coonfare put Army on the board with an RBI fielder's choice to score Tepley.
Moments later, aggressive baserunning produced another run as Coonfare stole second and Brown stole home, extending the lead to 2–0. Caitlyn Newburn followed with an RBI double to right center to make it 3–0, and Emma Murchison added another run-scoring double later in the frame for a commanding 4–0 lead after just one inning.
While the offense surged, Eaglin was untouchable in the circle. She retired the Islanders in order in the first, beginning a stretch of dominance that would last the entire game.
Army added to its advantage in the third inning. Ashton White opened with a double, and after an error put another runner aboard, Newburn delivered again with a two-run double to push the score to 6–0 in the third.
Later in the inning, Murchison reached on an error, and Hannah Laub lined an RBI single through the right side, stretching the margin to 7–0. Meanwhile, Eaglin continued to cruise, inducing weak contact and keeping the Islanders hitless through three frames.
The Black Knights plated one more run in the fourth. Taylor Brown singled and advanced on an error before Newburn drove her home with a base hit to left, making it 8–0 in the fourth inning, the final tally of the game.
From there, the story belonged entirely to Eaglin. She needed little run support as she carved through the Islanders' lineup, recording groundouts, popups, and routine plays behind her defense. The Islanders managed only a hit batter in the first inning but never produced a base hit, as Eaglin completed a five-inning no-hitter, retiring the side in order in four of the five innings.
Army threatened again in the fifth with a Tepley double but did not add insurance. It proved unnecessary, as Eaglin finished the job cleanly, sealing the shutout and the no-hit performance.
GAME 2
Just like the first game of the day, the Black Knights wasted no time seizing control at the top of the first inning. Sienna Tepley opened with a single, and Taylor Brown immediately drove her home with an RBI triple down the right-field line for a 1–0 lead in the first.
Ashton White followed with an RBI double to make it 2–0, and the inning snowballed from there. After Caitlyn Newburn reached on an error and Micaela Garcia delivered an RBI single, Sam Rodgers broke the game open with a two-run single to center, pushing the margin to 5–0 before Tarleton State recorded its first out of the frame.
Meanwhile, Izzo set the tone in the bottom half. Although Tarleton State put a runner on via a walk, Izzo struck out the next batter looking and escaped without allowing a hit, the first step in what would become a no-hit performance.
Army extended the lead dramatically in the third inning.
After loading the bases with one out, Tepley delivered a clutch two-run single to center that turned into three runs when a fielding error allowed another runner to score, stretching the advantage to 8–0 in the third inning. Brown followed with another RBI single to make it 9–0, firmly putting the run rule in sight.
Izzo continued to overpower the Texan lineup. She induced weak contact and piled up strikeouts, including swinging strikeouts in the second and fourth innings and another key punchout in the fifth. Tarleton State never managed a hit, with its only baserunners coming via walks or errors.
Army added the final insurance run in the fifth. Tepley and Brown both singled to spark the rally, and pinch-hitter Hannah Laub lined an RBI single to left field to score Tepley, pushing the lead to 10–0 in the fifth inning.
From there, Izzo and the Black Knights closed the door. She struck out Bojkovic to start the bottom of the fifth and added another strikeout looking later in the inning.
Then, on the final at-bat of the game, Tarleton State hit a ball towards shallow left field, but Annie Christiana made a diving catch to make the final out. This forced Tarleton State to finish hitless, and allowed Izzo to complete the five-inning no-hitter with multiple strikeouts across every trip through the order.
