Army Takes Third at Penn 8-Team Select
January 20, 2018 | Women's Track and Field
WEST POINT, NY – The Army West Point women's track and field team claimed third place at the Penn 8-Team Select Saturday evening. Â
Â
The Penn 8-Team Select was hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at the Ocean Breeze Track in Staten Island, N.Y. The team faced competition from Manhattan, Saint Joseph's, the women of St. John's, Stony Brook, Villanova and Wagner.Â
Â
COACH'S QUOTES:
"My primary goal for our team today was for us to continue to build our competitive balance," said head coach Mike Smith. "Some people got their first chance to compete in secondary events and others were able build their conference resume. We were particularly good in the throws and the middle and long distance events."
Â
"Briyah Brown highlighted our throws group again today. She won both the shot and weight and her weight mark was a new school record. She is on a real roll right now having broken the shot and weight all time mark in back to back weeks. She broke the school record by over 2 feet. That is just a remarkable accomplishment. She has worked hard to get to this point and I am really proud of her."
Â
"The distance runners were also very competitive today. We had multiple athletes set personal best marks in the 800, mile, and 3000m. I have been waiting for some of the younger athletes to break through and was happy to see them perform so well today.
Â
"We are making great progress and starting to gel at the right time. In the overall team scoring we finished third in the 8-team field. I take a lot of pride in performing well at these scored meets and am pleased with what we did today with the people that we brought."
Â
TRACK EVENTS
The team returns to action on Jan.26 at the Penn State National Invitational at University Park, Pa.
