Army Edges Sacred Heart in Non-Conference Affair

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore Rex Epps broke a tiebreaker in the second half to put the Army West Point men's soccer team past Sacred Heart, 2-1, on Tuesday night in Malek Stadium at Clinton Field.
The Black Knights moved to 6-3 on the season with the win, while Sacred Heart fell to 3-6.
The two squads combined for 27 shots on the game with Army holding the slight edge, 15-12. The Black Knights had several quality looks in the opening stanza after getting on the board within the first three minutes. However, all of them, including four from Epps, were sent away by the Sacred Heart goalkeeper.

MALEK STADIUM
Prior to the game, the new Malek Soccer Stadium was dedicated. Malek Stadium features an elevated, multi-level press box with improved broadcasting capabilities, individual cushioned seating at centerfield for premium spectators, and upgraded facilities to enhance the fan experience. This new top-notch facility reflects Army Soccer's level of excellence and will enable cadet-athletes to perform and compete at the highest levels.
The stadium project was fully funded by Fred Malek. Long a champion of Army West Point Athletics and a multi-sport athlete and soccer player as a cadet, Mr. Malek has also supported the Malek Tennis Center and the O'Meara, Malek, Dawkins, Class of 1959 Strength Development Center in the Kimsey Complex, as well as the soon to be opened Frederic V. Malek West Point Visitors Center.

- Army claimed its fourth consecutive victory over Sacred Heart.
- Freshman Roman Guiseppi tallied his first collegiate goal.
- Sophomore Tyler Mitchiner dished out his first helper of the year.
- Junior Grayson Naquin got the starting nod for the first time this season.
- Epps tallied his team-best fifth goal on the year to go along with an assist.
- The Black Knights recorded double-digit shots for the 16th consecutive game dating back to last season.
- Army picked up its fourth one-goal victory this year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the third minute, senior Marcos Arroyo took a corner and sent the ball into the box where Epps got a touch on it before Guiseppi skied into the air and headed it into the back of the net to put Army on top 1-0.
- With less than four minutes remaining in the half, Sacred Heart's Ezra Siyadhuba lined up a shot from the left side and used his left foot to send a booming strike on a line to the opposite side of the net, knotting the score up at one apiece.
- In the 68th minute, Mitchiner dribbled the ball down the middle of the field and found a charging Epps, who fired a shot from the right side past the keeper and in for the game-winning goal.
