Late-Game Heroics Puts Army Past Siena
September 13, 2017 | Men's Soccer
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team found a way to win in the 104th minute after Tyler Mitchiner buried the game-winning goal to seal a 1-0 double-overtime victory against Siena on Wednesday afternoon.
The Black Knights improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Saints remain winless and fall to 0-2-3. Army controlled the tempo of the game and continued to pile on shots against the Saints defense. Despite coming up short on several tries, the Black Knights were persistent and Mitchiner was able to deliver his first score of the season and second of his career.
"I want to give full credit to Siena as they were a tough team to play against and hard to play through," head coach Russell Payne said. "We were really fortunate that we were able to score in overtime and I am proud of the guys because they created a lot of scoring chances. They kept their composure at the right moments and found the goal. Now we regroup and have the confidence and momentum going into the game on Sunday against Marist."
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
The Black Knights return to West Point to welcome Marist for a Sunday meeting slated for 7 p.m. in Malek Stadium at Clinton Field.
