WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's tennis team is heading to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year and is going to face No. 5 UCLA.
The Bruins will host the regional round with the first slate of games coming on Friday, May 12. First serve for the Black Knights is scheduled for 12 p.m.
"They are a great team," commented head coach Jim Poling. "They are always in the top 10 in the nation. It is a great opportunity for us to play a team of that caliber. We know they are good and they have great facilities. The guys are excited to go out there and play."
The Black Knights recorded a record of 21-9 into the postseason after defeating service-academy rival Navy in the Patriot League Championship match. In the final of the tournament, Army fought hard to get four points after losing the doubles point to start the match. Senior captain Sam Lampman secured the match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the No. 2 flight.
This is the second year in a row that Army will be attending the NCAA tournament and the eighth time overall. Last year, the Black Knights traveled to Cal. Berkeley to take on the Golden Bears. Army fell to Cal 4-0. This will mark mark the third time Army has played in the state of California in the postseason, previously playing Cal in 2016 and Stanford in 2011.
UCLA was the PAC-12 runner-ups after having a 19-5 spring record. The Bruins went 6-0 in conference and were 14-0 on their home court.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Army and the Bruins and the winner will face the winner of the Mississippi and UC Santa Barbara match.
