Hornick’s Game-Winner Pushes Army Past Quinnipiac

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With 1:30 remaining in double overtime, junior Rachel Hornick netted the game-winning goal to lift Army past Quinnipiac 9-8 on Sunday evening at Yale's Reese Stadium.
Maddie Burns started the play after picking up a huge save in the sudden-victory to keep the score knotted at 8-8. She then cleared the ball to Amy Johnston who found Hornick after streaking up the field with just under two minutes remaining in the second overtime frame. Hornick was fouled in the arc and scored top shelf on the 8-meter to give the Black Knights a win in their first overtime game as a program.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army improves to 4-1 on the season after the team's second win in the state of Connecticut this week.
- Today's game was the Black Knights' first overtime appearance as a varsity program.
- Hornick's game-winner was her first goal of the game.
- Manuela Cortes headlined Army's scoring efforts with three goals, while Hornick added two goals and a helper to also tally three points. Samantha Stewart added two in the game, while Emma Roerty, Johnston, Kelsea Krauss and Hornick each tabbed one.
- Krauss and Erin Jollota both posted one assist in the game to round-out the Cadets' scoring.
- The Black Knights saw Burns, Roerty and Rachel Treweeke with three ground balls apiece with Roerty leading the way in caused turnovers with three. Madeline Leahy recorded two caused turnovers from the defensive side of the ball.
- Burns totaled eight saves in her fourth win of the season.
- The game was extremely even with Army and Quinnipiac both recording 26 shots, 10 draw controls and 23 turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, but Quinnipiac scored five of the next six goals to take the lead heading into halftime.
- Jollota connected with Cortes five minutes into the game to put Army on the board first. Then Hornick found Krauss in the middle before Stewart scored an unassisted goal. All three goals were in a one minute span.
- The Bobcats went on a 5-1 run to close-out the half with Roerty netting the Cadets' lone goal in the stretch at the 5:28 mark.
- Quinnipiac scored first to start the next 30 minutes of play, but a 3-0 run by the Black Knights helped them retake the lead.
- Cortes fueled the fire with an unassisted goal before Hornick and Johnston connected. Krauss found Stewart from behind to punch in Army's seventh goal of the game with 10:48 to go.
- The two teams traded goals, but the Bobcats then found themselves on a 2-0 run to end regulation with the score knotted at 8-8.
- In the first overtime, the Black Knights took four shots, three of which went wide.
- Then in the final frame of extra time, Army got the ball back to its end off the Burns save and Johnston clear. Hornick netted her 14th of the season on the free-position.

- The Black Knights will return to Michie Stadium this Wednesday as they host UMass Lowell at 3 p.m.
