Black Knights’ Comeback Falls Short to River Hawks

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After trailing 10-0 in the first 35 minutes of play, the Army West Point women's lacrosse team staged a comeback against UMass Lowell with a 5-0 run. The Black Knights' rally fell short however as the River Hawks sealed the game 13-6.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Amy Johnston recorded a hat trick to lead Army's offense, while Erin Jollota, Taylor Andrews and Rachel Hornick each added scoring tallies.
- Hornick also added an assist in the contest along with Samantha Stewart who also dished out one helper.
- Johnston and Juliana Dworschak stood out on the circle as they both picked up three draw controls. Emma Roerty recorded two of her own, while Manuela Cortes and Hornick both notched one.
- Cortes and Stewart led the team with three caused turnovers apiece as Hornick and Lindsay Shelby both tallied a pair.
- Maddie Burns had a team-high of seven groundballs in the game, while Cortes picked up five.
- The River Hawks outshot Army 27-22, but the Black Knights had the upper hand in ground balls (26-24), draws (12-9) and free position attempts scored (3-0).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMass Lowell started the game with the first 10 goals and led 7-0 at halftime. The Army attempted a few adjustments with Dworschak stepping in on the draw and gaining a few possessions, but Courtney Barrett stood strong in net for the River Hawks to maintain the shutout until 35 minutes into the game.
- The Black Knights netted their first of the game at the 25:24 minute mark of the second half to snap a 10-0 run by the River Hawks.
- Jollota passed the ball up top to Johnston who dodged multiple defenders on an iso towards the goal. She scored overtop Barrett.
- This fueled a 5-0 run by Army with the next two goals coming off free position shots.
- Hornick converted on the 8-meter first and again beat Barrett up high with Johnston following suit.
- Roerty aided in the run with two-straight draw controls.
- On the next possession, Andrews and Stewart connected on a quick stick goal to chip Umass Lowell's lead to six goals. The four goals were scored in a 10 minute span.
- Army's next goal came on a fast break when Hornick passed it from the top of the arc to Jollota who found the back of the net on the near pipe.
- The River Hawks did not stay quiet in the game and netted one with 7:29 on the clock to increase their lead to 11-5.
- Johnston scored her third of the game with three minutes remaining off another free position attempt.
- The River Hawks closed-out the game with a goal with 2:00 remaining to bring the score to 13-6. Neither team would convert again in the second half.
TURNING POINT
- The River Hawks' 10-0 start to the game allowed them to keep Army at an arm's length from the lead for the entirety of the contest. The Black Knights staged a late comeback, but could not overcome the early 10-goal deficit.
UP NEXT
- Army will be on the road for the next three contests. The first two will be in Georgia at Mercer (Mar. 12) and Kennesaw State (Mar. 14) before returning to the Northeast where the Black Knights will open league play at Lafayette (Mar. 18).
