McCarthy Leads Army Past High Point, 7-3
March 05, 2017 | Baseball
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Army West Point baseball team avoided a weekend sweep here Sunday afternoon after posting a 7-3 victory at High Point.
Â
John McCarthy had a solid outing for the Black Knights finishing 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. The junior also notched his second double of the year, while earning his first home run of the season in the third inning. The Jupiter, Fla., native added two stolen bases to close out his impressive day.
Â
Alex Dickerson, Trey Martin and Josh White also posted hits in the win, while Jon Rosoff and Martin chipped in an RBI.
Â
Army jumped out to the 4-0 edge after the first inning, thanks in part to a double by McCarthy. The Panthers tallied one run back in the bottom half but three additional runs by the Black Knights in the third handed the Cadets a 7-1 advantage.
Â
The home team tried to rally in the bottom half of the sixth inning, and even recorded two runs, but the Army pitching staff held strong to secure the Black Knights' third win of the year.
Daniel Gibbons shifted his overall record to 1-1 after allowing just four hits and one earned run during his 5.0 innings of work. The junior posted three strikeouts while in the circle as well. Matt Ball came in for relief, giving up two hits and two earned runs in his 1.1 innings, before Carter Van Gytenbeek closed out the final 2.2 innings to tally his first career save after allowing just two hits.

FACTS & FIGURES
- Army posted six hits and seven runs in the game, while the Panthers notched eight hits and three runs.
- High Point registered four errors in the game to Army's two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lindner earned a one-out walk in the first to spark a rally. Dickerson followed that up singling through the left side, before advancing to second on a throwing error. Lindner shifted to third on the play. During the ensuing at bat, McCarthy doubled down the left field line to bring home Army's first two runs of the game. Hudgins then earned a walk before he and McCarthy stole a base. McCarthy ended up scoring on that play thanks to a throwing error by the catcher. The Panthers tallied the second out of the inning, but Martin knocked in another run during the ensuing at bat after singling to center field.
- High Point scored one run back in the bottom half after a two-out double brought home Jordan Sergent.
- McCarthy added to Army's lead in the third when he belted one over the left field fence to make it a 4-1 ballgame. Hudgins followed that up earning a walk before the Panthers were forced to make a pitching change. During the next at bat, Lee reached on a fielding error to place runners on first and second. High Point earned two outs on the ensuing play thanks to a strikeout and Hudgins caught stealing. White was then hit by a pitch before Monge earned another walk to load the bases. After High Point's second pitching change of the inning, Rosoff walked to bring home Army's second run og the inning. All the baserunners then shifted up following a passed ball, handing the Cadets a 7-1 advantage.
- The Panthers tried to rally in the sixth after Sergent homered to kick off the inning following a Black Knights' pitching change. Back-to-back walks placed runners on first and second before the two baserunners shifted up a base thanks to a wild pitch. Josh Greene then converted on a sacrifice hit to bring home the final run for the Panthers.
- From then on the Army defense took over and secured its third win of the year.
UP NEXT
- Army remains on the road for its next couple outings as part of its annual spring break trip. The Black Knights will head down to Atlanta, Ga., where they will meet Bowling Green and Alabama State twice as well as a single game with Georgia State beginning March 10. The team will then head to Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C., for a three-game set with the Blue Hose. That series will run from March 17-19.
