Black Knights Fall In Spring Break Opener
March 10, 2017 | Baseball
EMERSON, Ga. – The Army West Point baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision to Bowling Green here Friday night.
It was a pitcher's duel throughout the opening three innings as the game's first hit wasn't recorded until the fourth. Unfortunately, the designed home team saw Bowling Green use that hit and turn it into a run to take a 1-0 edge.
The Falcons tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth before adding an insurance run in the eighth.
Army tried to rally several times throughout the contest but eight runners left on base ultimately ended up costing the Cadets.
Alex Dickerson and Josh White recorded the Black Knights' two hits on the day.
Jeremy Mortensen dips to 0-3 on the season after allowing four hits and four runs, two of which were earned, in his 5.1 innings of work.

- Bowling Green notched two errors to Army's three
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team recorded a hit until Bowling Green led off the fourth with a single to the shortstop. After a sacrifice bunt shifted the runner over to second, Basalyga brought him home on the ensuing play thanks to a double.
- Army tried to spark a two-out rally in the fifth when Trey Martin earned a walk. On the next at bat, White singled through the right side to place runners on first and second. After a pitching chance, the Falcons registered a key strikeout to end the inning and halt Army's rally short.
- The designated visiting team tallied three big runs in the sixth, only one of which was earned, to break the game open at 4-0.
- Again the Black Knights tried to respond in the bottom half of the sixth. Jon Rosoff and Kris Lindner earned back-to-back walks to kick off the inning. Dickerson and John McCarthy then hit into consecutive fielder's choices for the Falcons' first two outs of the inning. Rosoff was able to shift to third on the first fielder's choice. With runners on first and third, Garett Houston then pinch hit and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Unfortunately, Bowling Green recorded the final out of the inning during the next at bat.
- The Falcons added an insurance run in the eighth before closing out the final inning and a half to preserve the shutout win.
