Army Can’t Overcome Holy Cross in Midweek Tilt

WEST POINT, N.Y. – In a mid-week tilt at Michie Stadium, the Army West Point women's lacrosse team fell to Patriot League foe Holy Cross, 12-9, on Wednesday evening.
The Black Knights fell to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot League as the Crusaders improved to 6-5 and 1-2.

The Black Knights fell to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot League as the Crusaders improved to 6-5 and 1-2.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Manuela Cortes led the Black Knights with a hat trick, while Samantha Stewart netted two goals and added a helper and Rachel Hornick had a goal and two assists. Amy Johnston tallied a goal and an assist, while Kiersten Spencer and Erin Jollota also notched scores.
- Rilee Scott stepped up on the defensive side of the ball for the Black Knights with a game-leading six groundballs, while Spencer and had four, Stewart picked up three and Nia Crump tallied two.
- Rachel Treweeke totaled three caused turnovers in the game as Crump, Shelby Lindsay and Spencer all had two apiece.
- Kayla Rowley recorded six saves in net for the Cadets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start things off with two free position goals, but two straight from the Black Knights kept them right in the game. However, the Cadets would never gain the league in the full 60 minutes.
- Jollota got Army on the board first with a crease roll from the right side before Johnston connected with Cortes high to low.
- Holy Cross bounced back with a 2-0 run to regain the lead at 4-2 with goals spaced under a minute apart.
- The Black Knights bookended another Crusaders goal with Stewart and Cortes netting unassisted tries. But the Crusaders closed-out the half on a 3-1 run to gain an 8-5 lead.
- Hornick found Cortes from behind as she attacked the goal from the elbow for Army's goal in the run.
- To open up the second half, the Crusaders struck at the 28:06 minute mark, but two goals from the Black Knights decreased their opponents lead to 9-7.
- Johnston took the ball in herself before Miller found Spencer on the elbow – low to high.
- Holy Cross converted on its first 8-meter of the half to take a 10-7 lead with 22:07 to go.
- After 12:21 of back-and-forth of no goals, Hornick netted her first of the game with help from Stewart, but the Crusaders scored to keep a three-goal lead.
- Stewart scored with 52 seconds remaining for Army to trail by two with an assist from Hornick.
KEY STATISTIC
- The Black Knights and Crusaders were both plagued with turnovers throughout the game. Holy Cross had one less (23-22) which helped give the team the advantage in the matchup.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights are on the road this weekend with the program's first trip to Navy. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
