Black Knights Fall to Navy
April 01, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team dropped a 22-7 decision to Navy Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
"I thought we did a good job in the first half winning the draw battle and capitalizing on our offensive possessions," said Noto family head women's lacrosse coach Kristen Skiera. "However, a slow start defensively and on the draw in the second half really hurt us. We had minimal opportunities with the ball in our offensive end. Navy is a really balanced team on offense - with talented feeders, off-ball threats and driving threats. We really struggled defensively to defend all of those threats and appeared to be a step behind today. They were able to capitalize on the mistakes we made. It was not our strongest performance of the season, but a stepping stone in terms of knowing where we need to be skill-wise when we step back on the field against Navy next year."

SCOUTING ARMY
- Amy Johnston led the way for the Black Knights with a hat trick and a game-leading seven draw controls.
- Manuela Cortes and Rachel Hornick each netted two as Hornick added an assist. Samantha Stewart, Erin Jollota and Amanda Roper were also credited with assists in the game.
- Kiersten Spencer and Cortes both tallied caused turnovers and one groundball apiece. They were joined by Johnston, Nia Crump, Shelby Lindsay, Rilee Scott and Taylor Andrews who all notched one groundball each.
- In the first half, the teams were knotted with four saves apiece with Army edging Navy on the draw circle 9-6.
- However Navy pulled ahead with an 11-4 advantage in the second half on the circle.
- Kayla Rowley made five saves in net for the Black Knights.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Navy jumped ahead 5-0 within the first 10 minutes of the game. Army's first offensive possession came at the 24 minute mark after Rowley spurred up a save.
- Johnston got the Black Knights on the board with 17:48 on the clock. Hornick found her cutting up the middle and fed the ball to her for a quick stick from the left elbow.
- The Midshipmen then went on a 3-0 run before Army would net two of its own.
- Hornick started things off by converting on the 8-meter beating Ingrid Boyum stick side hip. Then it was Johnston again as she tapped a pass in from Roper to the lower left corner of the goal to make it a five-goal game.
- The Mids netted another pair before Hornick found the back of the net again. She completed a spin dodge on top of the crease and her bounce shot went between Boyum's legs with 48 seconds on the clock. Rowley would close-out the half with a save, but Navy led 10-4 after the first 30 minutes.
- Cortes cut the Mids' 4-0 run to start off the second half when she scored top shelf while fading out of the fan. This brought the score to 14-5 in favor of Navy who tallied another 1:06 later.
- Army won the ensuing draw control as Stewart carried the ball down the left side and found Cortes open in the middle who finished top right.
- After another Midshipmen goal, Maddie Burns entered the cage for Army. Navy continued on its 7-1 run to close-out the game.
- The Black Knights scored their lone-goal in the stretch on a textbook clear as Hornick carried the ball up from the opposite restraining line, found Jollota low who quickly passed to Johnston who was trailing the play. She was able to catch the Mids' goalie out of position to give Army its seventh of the game.
KEY STATISTIC
- Navy outshot Army 37-13 and led in draw controls (17-13), and caused turnovers (7-2).
UP NEXT
