Army’s Comeback Not Enough to Overpower Bonnies

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team had a late rally Saturday afternoon against St. Bonaventure, but could not overcome the Bonnies' 12-11 lead.
Army led 7-6 at halftime, but St. Bonaventure went on a 5-1 run to start the final 30 minutes of play to capture the win.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Black Knights were led by Manuela Cortes who posted a game-high five goals. The sophomore netted three in the first half and two in the second.
- Erin Jollota tallied two goals in the effort, while Amy Johnston notched two points off a goal and an assist.
- Taylor Andrews dished out two helpers and Samantha Stewart and Emma Roerty both recorded one assist each.
- Kiersten Spencer, Morgan Shorts and Maddie Miller all found themselves in the goal column with one apiece.
- Spencer's goal was the first of the season for the junior co-captain.
- Maddie Burns made six saves in net for Army and picked up three ground balls.
- Shelby Lindsay steadied the Black Knights' defensive efforts with a game-leading five ground balls and added five caused turnovers.
- Cortes, Ryan Murphy, Spencer and Madeline Leahy each contributed two caused turnovers in the effort.
- On the draw, it was Johnston and Spencer who both picked up two controls.
- The Bonnies were led by LeighAnn Stauffer and Scarlet Jaworski who each tallied three goals. In net, Morgan Conroy made 17 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Bonaventure jumped ahead 2-0 within the first four minutes of the game.
- Johnston got things rolling for the Black Knights with a goal at the 25:03 mark which was assisted by Stewart.
- Jollota tied the game at two-all off a pass from Andrews during a slow break clear.
- The Bonnies went on a 2-0 run of their ownto reclaim the lead at 4-2, but four consecutive tallies from the Black Knights regained Army's lead.
- Cortes ignited the run with two unassisted goals. The first was off an up-and-under dodge and the next off a fast break from Roerty's draw control.
- Miller gave Army its first lead of the game when she received a pass from Roerty who was given a free position shot. Miller caught the ball low and finished high right to beat the St. Bonaventure goalie.
- Shorts ended the run on another passed free position shot from Andrews.
- St. Bonaventure closed-out the first half with two goals to tie it up 6-6, but with the clock dwindling to zeros, Cortes streaked down the field and scored at the buzzer off an eight-meter.
- The second half was in the Bonnies' favor as they went on a 5-1 run to open things up. Army's lone goal in the stretch came from Spencer off a free position.
- There was a 10 minute gap in which neither team scored, but St. Bonaventure got things rolling with 3:38 left on the clock before the Black Knights went on a 3-0 run.
- Johnston won the ensuing draw control and passed it to Cortes who went 1-on-1 with the St. Bonaventure goalie to keep Army in the game.
- Jollota answered 38 seconds later with an unassisted goal of her own to bring the score to 12-10, still in favor of the Bonnies.
- Cortes closed-out Army's scoring off an 8-meter to make it a one-goal game. St. Bonaventure held onto the next draw to win the game 12-11.
TURNING POINT
- The 5-1 run by St. Bonaventure to open the second half gave it the momentum it needed to win the game.

- Army hits the road once again to take on Central Connecticut State Wednesday at 1 pm.
