Black Knights Defeat CCSU on the Road

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Led by Rachel Hornick and Erin Jollota, the Army West Point women's lacrosse team downed Central Connecticut State Wednesday afternoon, 13-11, at Arute Field.
The Black Knights led the Blue Devils 8-4 at halftime due in part to a 5-0 run by the Cadets. Central Connecticut State staged a comeback in the second half, but Army persevered to hold onto the win and to improve to 3-1 on the year.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Hornick and Jollota led Army's offense with four points each. Hornick netted three goals and added an assist, while Jollota posted two goals and two helpers.
- Manuela Cortes added two first-half goals and an assist, while Kelsea Krauss had two scores of her own.
- Amy Johnston, Morgan Shorts, Taylor Andrews and Rilee Scott were all goal scorers for the Black Knights.
- Johnston also recorded two assists and was joined by Emma Roerty, who tallied one helper as well.
- Rachel Treweeke and Madeline Leahy led Army with four ground balls apiece, while Leahy also added three caused turnovers. Kiersten Spencer and Scott both notched two caused turnovers as well.
- Maddie Burns appeared in net for the Black Knights and made eight saves for a .421 save percentage.
- Roerty was the standout on the circle with three draw controls and was followed by Johnston who picked up two. Shelby Lindsay, Leahy, Cortes, Spencer, Andrews and Hannah Shiflet also added one control each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights wasted no time in gaining a lead in the game. Hornick was the first on the board for Army with a goal three minutes into the game. She was assisted by Johnston on the play.
- Central Connecticut State bounced back with two straight goals, but Cortes and Jollota answered with two of their own. Cortes' was off a free position, while Jollota's came off a pass from Roerty on the clear.
- The Blue Devils continued to battle and took a brief 4-3 lead before a 5-0 run by the Black Knights closed out the first half.
- Hornick fueled the run, while Cortes, Jollota off the 8-meter, Krauss and Johnston all tallied goals in the stretch. Jollota also added an assist to Krauss to pad Army's lead to 8-4 at the half.
- The Blue Devils had the hot hand to start off the second half and netted two goals within 1:28 minutes of each other.
- Johnston connected with Shorts in front to keep the Cadets' lead to three goals with 23:34 on the clock. Central Connecticut State and the Black Knights would trade goals with Army's coming from Andrews before a 2-0 run by the Blue Devils brought the game within one.
- Krauss struck again with an assist from Hornick, but less than a minute later the Blue Devils tallied another score to make it an 11-10 game.
- With 11:31 remaining in the game, Hornick scored her third of the contest with the assist coming from Cortes off the draw which was won by Roerty.
- After much back-and-forth action, the Black Knights were able to capitalize on a Blue Devils turnover. Army called timeout after a successful clear before Scott and Jollota connected for the score.
- Central Connecticut State ended the game with a goal with 22 seconds remaining to bring the score to 13-11 as the final.
TURNING POINT
- The Black Knights' 5-0 run in the first half was the difference maker in today's game.
UP NEXT
- Army continues its two-game road series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Quinnipiac. The Bobcats are the home team, but the game will be held at Yale's Reese Stadium.
