Black Knights Fall to Navy in Five Sets

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West point volleyball team was edged out by Navy, 3-2, Sunday afternoon to close-out the regular season.

The Midshipmen captured the second seed in the Patriot League Tournament and the Black Knights third. The two teams will face off for the third time this season in the semifinals Friday night at host American. Â

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND MATCH NOTES
- Amber Clay notched a team-leading 20 kills in the match.
- Allie Strong notched a double-double on 11 kills and 13 digs, while Carolyn Bockrath also produced 11 kills on the day.
- Vanessa Wesley tallied eight kills and Sydney Morriss seven.
- Ana Oglivie garnered 25 digs to lead both teams.
- Nikki Lum had four service aces and dished out 26 assists. Haven Bethune recorded 27 helpers through five sets.
- The match featured 35 tie scores and 13 lead changes today.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (25-18 ARMY)
- The set went back-and-forth for the first half of play.
- Army went on a 7-0 run to reach set point. Navy came back with one of its own points, but a cross-court kill by Wesley sealed the deal for the Black Knights.
- Morriss had four kills for Army with a .571 hitting percentage.
- Clay added five kills, while Wesley and Bockrath each garnered two in the set.
- Lum dished out nine assists.
SET TWO (25-23 NAVY)
- The Mids came out strong in the next set, but a big block by Wesley and Bethune made it a one-point game at 9-8 in favor of the Midshipmen.
- Navy continued to lead at 15-13 and eventually 25-23 to knot the match at 1-1.
- Clay and Strong each recorded four kills in the set Lum had seven assists.
SET THREE (25-22 NAVY)
- An early 6-1 run by Army in the third set tied the score at 10-all.
- Navy then went on a 10-5 run to reach the 20-point mark first. The Midshipmen were able to battle to the end after Army's comeback came up just short.
- Bockrath had a four-kill presence in the set, while Wesley tallied three of her own.
SET FOUR (25-16 ARMY)
- Army did not go down without a fight charging ahead in the set and never looking back. Navy was able to tie things on one occasion, but the Black Knights maintained their lead throughout.
- Clay jumped out as Army's key contributor with six kills.
- Bethune led the way with five assists.
SET FIVE (15-13 NAVY) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
- Army reached the eight point mark first and led by one as the teams switched sides in the decisive fifth set.
- The two teams battled it out in the final set and were tied up at 12-all after back-to-back kills by Morriss, but Navy pulled away to win 15-13.
- Clay and Strong boosted the Black Knights ahead with three kills each.

- The Black Knights now reside at the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. Army and Navy will face off in the semifinals next Friday at host American.
