Women's XC Competes at Meet of Champions
September 15, 2016 | Women's Cross Country
West Point, N.Y. – After a dominating performance last weekend, the Army West Point women's cross country team will look to continue those winning ways at the Iona "Paddy Doyle" Meet of Champions on Friday.
The meet takes place at Van Cordtlandt Park in New York, N.Y.
The Black Knights will also gain some insight at this event, being that Van Cordtlandt Park is the host course for the 2016 NCAA Northeast Regional meet. This will be the first time the 2016 squad will run on this course and the first chance for the freshmen to race against regionally ranked opponents.
"We are looking forward to another 5k on the women's side," said head coach Mike Smith. "It is important for us to compete on this course and have a sense of what the terrain is like and what the environment is like. We are prepared, we are going to have a young team and compete against teams that are ranked higher than us in our region, including Iona and Columbia."

Rankings: The field includes regionally ranked Columbia (5), Iona (12) and Albany (14).
Army Runners (results from last meet): Bethany Nunnery (2 – 18:51.00), Samantha Coletti (3 – 15:55.61), Andrea Karlen (4 – 18:56.64), Ramsey Wagner (6 – 19:10.42), Kate Sanborn (9 – 19:43.00), Donia Nichols (16 – 20:24.96), Kajol Maheshwari (13 – 20:01.17).
"Since we are so young, the more opportunities we have to compete, the better," added Smith. "It just gives us a better gauge and measurement of where we are relative to where we were. Our team has looked good in practice so we want to see how that compares to racing and see if we see in races what we see in practice. I expect us to be led by freshmen and I hope to see some consistency from those young women, and see how that blends with what we saw two weeks ago at Maine."
UP NEXT:
Army will travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh on Oct. 1.
