April 30, 2016 | Men's Golf
DAY ONE RESULTS
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After the first two rounds of the Patriot League Championships, the Army West Point golf team leads the field by 12 strokes with four Black Knights ranking in the top-15. Dean Sakata heads into the final round ranked in first-place with 135 strokes.
"Dean had a fantastic day out on the course," said head coach Brian Watts. "He made a ton of birdies and had an eagle. He was in control of his game today and emotions, it all came together for him. He struggle a little coming in, but what a great day of golf he played. Dean kept us in the lead and put the team on his back to keep us in the tournament going into tomorrow. Overall, I thought we had some great stretches and gained a lot of shots back. Struggled with a few holes which led to some poor scores that we need to clean up for tomorrow's round."
The Black Knights rank first after totaling 284-284—568 (E) through 36 holes. Navy is the nest-best team with a 12-over score with Loyola rounding out the top-three with 585 strokes.
Sakata resides in first with rounds of 66-69—135 (-7). Round one's 66 ties his career-low and season-low score. Peter Kim is Army's next-best finisher as he ranks fourth with 143 strokes at one-over par. Marcus Plunkett finished the day tied for the seventh spot with rounds of 74-71—145 (+3).
Eric Peng ranks tied for 11th with a five-over score of 147, while Matt Plunkett (151) and Justin Pagila (153) are tied for 21st and tied for 29th, respectively.
Sakata leads the field in par-four and par-five chances and has recorded nine birdies and an eagle. Peng has recorded seven birdies, while Kim and Plunkett each have six.
The individual champion will be named the Patriot League Men's Golfer of the Year, while the highest finishing freshman receives the sport's Rookie of the Year honor. Head coaches from all eight schools will vote on the Patriot League Coach of the Year award.
The team champion receives the Patriot League's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, and the individual champion will also receive an automatic bid to the regionals (if that person is not a member of the team champion).
Army will be back at the Naval Academy Golf Club for tomorrow's final 18 holes as the Black Knights defend their lead.
