Fast Start Leads Lehigh Past Baseball in Game One
April 30, 2016 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – A four-run first inning by Lehigh allowed the Mountain Hawks to take game one of the final Patriot League series of the regular season from the Army West Point baseball team, 7-4, on Saturday afternoon from Doubleday Field.
Lehigh (20-26, 8-9 PL) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a three-run home run coming off the bat of Mike Garzillo. The Mountain Hawks extended its lead to five runs the next inning with an RBI fielder's choice by Garzillo that scored Jacen Nalesnik. Nalesnik led off for the second-straight inning, both times reaching with a base hit.
Army's (15-29, 5-12 PL) offense would come to life in the second inning, cutting the Lehigh lead to 5-3. A one-out walk by freshman Matt Hudgins started the inning, and Ryan Levenhagen singled two batters later advancing Hudgins to third base. Second baseman Josh White plated the Black Knights' first run of the game by singling through the right side. Kris Lindner shot a double over the head of the right fielder in the next at-bat, allowing Levenhagen and White to score.
Hudgins would remain active at the plate, bringing in Army's fourth run of the game. Following a leadoff walk by Jon Rosoff, John McCarthy singled to provide a first-and-third situation. Hudgins grounded out to second two batters later, scoring Rosoff from third.
Lehigh would end Army's streak of four unanswered runs in the fourth with a two-run inning. A diving stop by White on a missile up the middle coming from the bat of James Bleming opened the top of the inning, but back-to-back hits by Garzillo and Patrick Donnelly extended the lead to 6-4. After a groundout advanced Donnelly to third following his RBI double, a fielding error would allow the Mountain Hawks' third baseman to score.
In the top of the sixth, Lehigh would threaten to push across its eighth run of the game, but a defensive play by the Black Knights held the score at 7-4. A one-out single forced Army starter Jeremy Mortensen out of the game, making way for Cam Opp. A single by David Young and a fly out provided a first-and-third situation. Young was caught stealing to end the inning.
Game two will be start at roughly 3:50 p.m.
