Mountain Hawks Escape Baseball in Game Two
April 30, 2016 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team suffered a 3-1 setback in game two of Saturday's twin bill, allowing Lehigh to sweep the first two games of the series from Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.
"We played a sloppy second inning," said head coach Matt Reid. "The two walks to lead off the inning and the dropped ball at first base really hurt us and led to some runs. We've got to be sharper."
The Mountain Hawks (21-26, 9-9 PL) opened the scoring in the second inning with three runs. With back-to-back walks by David Young and John Scarr starting the inning, Mackey Price produced an RBI single that scored Young two batters later. A two-run throwing error capped the scoring for the inning.
Jacob Page responded for the Black Knights (15-30, 5-13 PL) in the home half of the frame with a solo home run with one out. Left fielder John McCarthy tried to manufacture his own run in the fourth inning after drawing a one-out walk. The sophomore from Jupiter, Fla., stole two bases to put himself on third, but was unable to be brought in.
Jacob Carte, who entered the game in the second inning, provided some much needed relief for Army, retiring nine of the last 11 batters he faced. The freshman from Charlotte, N.C., held the Mountain Hawks off the board while allowing just one hit in three and two thirds innings of work. Fellow freshman Cam Opp came in and continued the trend, scattering three hits through his three innings of work.
Army's best scoring chance came in the seventh inning when Keegan Vega provided a spark by reaching on a two-out, two-base error. A single and a stolen base by Josh White put runners on second and third for the Black Knights, but a lineout to third would end the inning.
Justin French came in to close the door with a one-two-three inning in the top of the ninth, striking out two batters to give Army a chance trailing by two runs headed into the team's final at bats.
"We're still in the race for the final spot in the tournament, so you've got to believe," commented Reid. "We're going to go out there tomorrow and play good baseball."
The Black Knights and Mountain Hawks will wrap up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader that is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. from Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.
