Quinnipiac Edges Past Women’s Lacrosse, 6-5
March 05, 2016 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end during a 6-5 setback against Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
The loss sends Army to 3-2 on the year, while Quinnipiac grabs its first win of the season to improve to 1-3.
Freshman Manuela Cortes led the Black Knights with two goals, while sophomore Rachel Hornick and Amy Johnston, and freshman Kelsea Krauss all scored once. Junior Erin Jollota and sophomore Kiersten Spencer each registered three ground balls, while Spencer also caused three Quinnipiac turnovers. Freshman Kayla Rowley made six saves.
Aileen Carey finished with a hat trick for the visitors and Kathleen DeVito added one goal and three assists. Goalkeeper Kyle Larkin came away with 11 saves in the win.
"We got a lot of shots off in this game, but I don't necessarily think we were taking quality shots," said head coach Kristen Waagbo. "I think we were a little rattled by some of the saves early on and I don't think we did a good job of responding to a really good goalie. I want to see us be competitors from the start. We're a young team and we never use that as an excuse, but we need to have those intangibles to be able to work hard for 60 minutes or more."
Army got on the board first when Hornick scored on a free-position shot with 19:41 remaining in the opening half. Quinnipiac responded with a goal of its own at the 13:34 mark, as Carey scored her first of the afternoon on an assist from DeVito.
Cortes added a marker on an assist from Krauss with 8:21 to play until halftime, as Army regained the one-goal advantage. The Bobcats went on to score two goals in the final 4:05 of the first half and control a 4-2 lead at the break before adding a third straight tally 4:43 into the second half to move out to a three-goal lead.
The Black Knights came all the way back to tie the contest at 5-5, as they found the back of the net three times during a period of 5:27. Krauss got the scoring run started, after she came from behind the goal to bury a close-range shot and make the score 5-3 with 25:17 left in the half. Cortes netted her second of the game with 20:56 to play and Johnston scored with 17:56 on the clock.
Larkin made a pair of saves for the visitors during the next 9:57 before Devin Kelly scored on an assist from DeVito to put Quinnipiac in front, 6-5.
Army registered one shot in the final 3:57, but the attempt was denied by Larkin, who finished with five of her 11 saves in the second half.
Army is off until next weekend, as the Black Knights begin a two-game trip to South Carolina over spring break. Army faces Winthrop on Saturday, March 12 at noon before playing Presbyterian on March 14 at 11 a.m.
GAME NOTES: Manuela Cortes finished with two goals for her second multi-goal game this season … Amy Johnston added a goal to extend her goal-scoring streak to five games … Saturday's loss was Army's third game this season decided by one goal (8-7 win over Central Connecticut State; 10-9 win over LIU Brooklyn).
