Women’s Lacrosse Heads South Over Spring Break

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team is set to play a pair of games in South Carolina during the start of spring break week, beginning with a matchup against unbeaten Winthrop on Saturday, March 12 at noon. The Black Knights will be in action two days later when they face Presbyterian on March 14 at 11 a.m.

Army is coming off a 6-5 setback against Quinnipiac on March 5 at Michie Stadium. The Black Knights trailed by three goals early in the second half before coming all the way back to force a 5-5 tie. The Bobcats netted the game winner with 4:59 remaining in the game.
Freshman Manuela Cortes scored twice for Army against Quinnipiac, while sophomores Rachel Hornick and Amy Johnston, and freshman Kelsea Krauss all found the back of the net once.
ARMY WEST POINT (3-2, 0-0 PATRIOT LEAGUE) NOTES
• Johnston leads Army with 12 goals, six assists, 18 points and 25 draw controls, while Hornick and freshman Nikki Polhamus are the next two leading goal scorers, with eight goals and seven goals, respectively.
• Freshman Kayla Rowley allows an average of 8.80 goals per contest and averages 6.4 saves per game in five outings this season.
• The Black Knights enter the weekend with a free-position percentage of .400 (10-of-25), while allowing opponents just .167 percent on free-position attempts (4-of-24).
• Army takes to the road for just the second time this season, as the Black Knights earned a 10-8 win at UMass Lowell in their only previous away game on Feb. 28.
WINTHROP (7-0, 0-0 BIG SOUTH) NOTES
• Winthrop extended its winning streak to seven games to begin the season, after a 10-9 victory over William & Mary on March 6.
• The Eagles trailed 8-6 with 18:45 left in the second half before scoring four unanswered goals to go ahead.
• Winthrop averages over 13 goals per game on the year and has four players who have scored at least 10 times, including senior Shannon Gallagher, who leads the team with 17 goals.
• Winthrop was picked to repeat as Big South champions in the conference's preseason poll, after the Eagles went 17-4 overall and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2015.
PRESBYTERIAN (1-4, 0-0 BIG SOUTH) NOTES
• Presbyterian dropped its fourth game in a row on March 5, taking a 10-9 loss in double overtime against Stetson.
• Presbyterian controlled a three-goal advantage with 5:43 remaining in regulation before Stetson scored three times in the final 4:18 to force overtime.
• Sophomore Lauren Schaaf leads the Blue Hose with 14 goals, while classmate Sophia Cuzzupe has team-high 24 ground balls.
• Presbyterian will travel to Washington, D.C., to face Howard on March 12 before returning to Clinton, S.C., for Monday's game against Army.

Army opens Patriot League play with a matchup against Lafayette on Saturday, March 19 at Michie Stadium. Opening draw against the Leopards is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
