THE OPENING FACEOFF
Army plays its final game of a three-game homestand with a visit from Holy Cross. This is the third Patriot League game for the Black Knights this season and they look to move to 3-0 on the year. Holy Cross comes into today's matchup with an 0-7 record with multiple one-goal losses on the year, including ones to Lehigh and Loyola. Army is hoping to get back on track against the Crusaders after Holy Cross won for the first time in the series last year with a 7-6 win in Worcester, Mass.
LAST TIME OUT
The Black Knights improved to 2-0 in league play with a 13-10 win over Lehigh last Saturday. Army scored seven goals in the third quarter to erase a two-goal deficit at halftime. Cole Johnson led the way with four goals and two assists for six points, while rookie Nate Jones chipped in with a hat trick. The Black Knights had a quick turnaround with a Sunday matchup against NJIT. They came out a little bit slot, but eight goals in the final quarter helped them to a 16-6 win over the Highlanders.
THIS WEEK'S STORYLINES
Army looks to move to 3-0 in league play to keep pace with Boston University for the top spot in the Patriot League. The Black Knights remember last season's 7-6 loss at Holy Cross and will hope to get back on track after losing their first game against the Crusaders in the series history. The Crusaders will be hungry coming into Michie Stadium as they are still looking for their first win of the season after coming up short in a few one-goal games.
WHAT'S UP NEXT?
The Black Knights head out on the road for the third team with a visit to Colgate next Saturday. The game is set for a 1 p.m. faceoff and can be seen live on the American Sports Network. The channel listings for the game will be available this coming week. They will be provided on GoArmyWestPoint.com. Next Saturday's matchup is a rematch of the 2015 Patriot League Championship, which Colgate won 11-8.
JONES NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Nate Jones earned his first weekly honor of his career at West Point as he was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week. He scored seven goals in the two wins last weekend with three against Lehigh and four opposite NJIT. Jones has had a great start to the season with 19 goals in his first seven games of the year. He is second on the team in points with 21.
MARCH TO A MILESTONE
Cole Johnson is three points away from 100 points in his career. He has 97 points on 66 goals and 33 assists and has gotten off to his best start in his two-plus years with 33 points in seven games in 2016. He leads the Patriot League in points and points per game.
JOHNSON NABS WEEKLY HONOR
Johnson led Army to a win in its league opener over Lehigh and earned Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. He posted a career high in goals and points with six and seven, respectively. He was unstoppable in the first half with five of the six goals coming in the first 30 minutes, including a natural hat trick in the second quarter.
BALANCED ATTACK
The Black Knights continue to be a balanced team on the offensive end as seven different players had goals against the Orange on Feb. 28 and they had six players tally goals against the Leopards. So far this year, 19 different Cadets have goals.
AT THE X
Army has had a great start to the season at the faceoff "x" as it ranks third the nation in winning percentage at .689. It leads the Patriot League in that category and as a team. Army dominated Lehigh at the faceoff with 22 wins on 27 chances. The 22 wins were the most on the season and the second time this year Army has posted 20 or more wins at the x.
D-FENSE, D-FENSE
Heading into this weekend, the Black Knights are sixth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 7.29 goals per game, and have held four opponents to six goals or less this season. Army is fourth in the country in scoring margin and is eighth in ground balls. Don't forget about the offense either as that unit is ninth in the nation.
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
Holy Cross comes to West Point with an 0-7 record on the year with an 0-3 mark in conference play. The Crusaders have had a tough start to the year with three one-goal losses, including games against Lehigh and Loyola. Last week, however, Bucknell put 18 on the board against Holy Cross after No. 5 Brown won 20-7 on March 8 opposite the Crusaders. They have given up double-digit goals in all seven games this season.
Marc Buermann leads the team with 20 points on 15 goals and five assists. He has four man-up goals, which is fourth in the nation. Sean Wilkinson is back for his final season and he eclipsed the 100-point career milestone last week against Bucknell. He has 51 goals and 51 assists for 102 points coming into Saturday's game. He has nine goals and nine helpers in 2016. Jon Vogel is the team's leading goal scoring with 16 on the season and has a goal in all seven of the games.
In net, Michael Ortlieb has returned and has a 11.14 goals against average. He has posted a .451 save percentage and has allowed 95 goals on 273 shots faced.
SERIES HISTORY
The Black Knights and Crusaders take the field for the 26th all-time meeting between the two schools. Army leads the series 24-1, but Holy Cross will look to continue its momentum from downing the Black Knights last season. Army was ranked No. 9 in the nation when Holy Cross stymied the Black Knights in Worcester, Mass., for a 7-6 win.
