Women’s Track Places Fourth at Patriot Leagues
February 21, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
BOSTON, Mass. – The Army West Point women's track and field team jumped two spots in the final day, placing fourth in the Patriot League Indoor Championships with 83.5 points from Boston University's Track and Tennis Center.
The host Terriers won the indoor meet for the second time in three years with 183 points, while Bucknell was the runner-up with 176 points. The third-place team was Lehigh, who finished with 129.5 points. This marked the first time since 2006 that the Black Knights have finished ahead of their service academy rivals, Navy.
"Our women were pretty special today," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "I know it is hard to believe that fourth would be something worth celebrating as a positive finish, but we really don't have a whole lot of depth on our team. We relied on a small group of tough, determined athletes to generate all of our points. I'm proud of the way our women fought for every point."
Senior Megan Gemar concluded her indoor career in style. The Walnut Creek, Calif., native won the pole vault by setting the program record at 6.90 meters. The record was previously 6.86 meters, set by Ashley Zeitvogel at the 2014 Patriot League meet.
"Megan was great in the vault," added Smith. "We really needed that win."
Joining Gemar on the pole vault scoresheet was freshman Maddie Schneider, who tied her career-best at 3.45-meters, finishing tied for sixth.
Two other Black Knights came away with individual championships in the 800-meter run and shot put. Freshman Cassie Mundekis captured her first 800-meter title with an ECAC/IC4A qualifying time of 2:11.18. Briyah Brown won the shot put with another ECAC/IC4A qualifying mark at 14.23 meters.
Senior captain Haley Winters continued yesterday's success in the sprints. She placed second in the 60-meter dash with a 7.68 in the finals, completing all three rounds faster than her previous career-high coming into the meet. She was joined in the finals of the event by freshman Whidney Desormo, who finished fourth at a consistent 7.81. The Tampa, Fla., native also recorded a 7.81 in the prelims and a 7.80 in the semis.
Winters and Desormo also placed in the 200-meter dash at third and seventh, respectively. The Spanaway, Wash., native recorded a 24.63 for the program's second-best all-time mark. Desormo finished the race with a time of 25.49.
In the mile, freshman Abby Halbrook placed third with an ECAC/IC4A qualifying time of 4:57.96. Senior Madison Hill also placed in her distance event, coming in eighth in the 3000-meter run with a 10:01.20.
Army's 4x400 relay team of Winters, Mundekis, Desormo and Courtney Dooley, which set the program record in yesterday's 4x800 relay, placed fifth on the final day of the meet at 3:52.85.
Army has concluded its indoor season and will begin its outdoor slate at UC Irvine's Anteater Four-Way on March 12.
