Softball Holds Off Arkansas, Wins Second Straight

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Army West Point softball team held off Arkansas' late comeback to defeat the Razorbacks 5-4 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. This marks the Black Knights' second-straight win as they improve to 3-6 and the program's first win over an SEC opponent.
The Cadets were able to deny Arkansas (4-5) from scoring at the top of the first and score in the home half of the inning to take a 2-0 lead. Mae Wadyka scored the first run of the game when she stole home after reaching on a walk. Alee Rashenskas tallied an RBI single allowing Kasey McCravey to score.
Both teams were scoreless in the second and third inning, but the Razorbacks were able to tie the game at 2-all at the top of the fourth. Maddie Kim prevented a score when she held onto the ball after a big collision at home plate, but Arkansas was able to score on the next play due to a walk. The Razorbacks then had a one-run RBI to second to tie things up at 2-2.
Army exploded at the bottom of the fifth when the team scored three runs. Wadyka was sent home on a one-run RBI by Kristen McPeek. Caroline Smith then reached on a fielder's choice advancing to second on a poor throw. McCravey and McPeek were both able to score for Army in the same play to push Army ahead 5-2.
The Razorbacks began a comeback during their last at bat at the top of the seventh. Arkansas tallied two homeruns in the seventh to bring the score to 5-4, but the Cadets were able to hold the Razorbacks off for their second-straight win.
McPeek, Smith and Rashenskas all notched RBIs in the win with Kim stroking a double. Wadyka and McCravey tallied two runs apiece for Army, while McPeek had one. Rashenskas had a team-high seven putouts and McCravey led the Black Knights with five assists. Kristen West earned her second-straight win from the circle with two strikeouts.
Army will be back in action with the final game of the tournament opposite the Wolverines at 8 p.m. (ET) at the Big League Dream Complex. All games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic will be streamed for fans by FloSoftball for a fee.
