Army Entertains Crusaders for Home-and-Home

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After a 1-1 weekend at home, the Army West Point hockey team entertains Holy Cross for a home-and-home series this weekend. The Black Knights host the Crusaders on Friday night before taking them on in Massachusetts on Saturday.

THIS WEEK: HOME-AND-HOME
- It will be the team's final home game of 2016 as the Cadets will not return to Tate after the New Year.
- Friday night's game can be followed on the usual channels; 1260 WBNR-AM and 1420 WLNA-AM, online audio at GoArmyWestPoint.com/watch and on the Atlantic Hockey video stream.
- Saturday's game will be streamed in full online, while the radio segments will pick up after the Army-Navy football game broadcast goes off the air on 1260 WBRN-AM only.
- The Black Knights topped Atlantic Hockey foe AIC, 1-0, Friday night to earn two critical points to maintain one of the top spots in the league standings.
- Ian Mansfield netted the game-winning goal in the third period to prevent an overtime stanza. That was the third goal of his career, all of which come against the Yellow Jackets.
- Tipper Higgins was credited with the assist on the play. Friday also marked Parker Gahagen's fourth shutout of the year with 25 saves, and he now ranks first nationally for blanking opponents.
- The Cadets then fell to Brown on Saturday night with a 3-1 score.
- Zach Evancho tallied his third power play goal of the year halfway through the second period. Alex Wilkinson dished out his third assist on the 4-on-3 opportunity.
- Gahagen posted another 32 saves which was the fourth time this season he has stopped over 30 shots.
- After posting his fourth shutout of the season, senior goaltender Gahagen was named Atlantic Hockey's Goalie of the Week for the third time this year, announced by the league on Tuesday.
- While stopping 25 shots and allowing no goals in Friday's 1-0 win over AIC, Gahagen is now first in the nation for blanking opponents. It was the 11th game this season that he has made at least 20 saves.
- On Saturday, the Buffalo, N.Y., native made 32 saves on 34 shots against Brown. It was the fourth game of 2016 that Gahagen has stopped over 30 shots.
- Apart from being first in the nation for shutouts, Gahagen ranks third with a 1.72 goals against average and fourth in saves percentage (.939).
- For the third time this season, the Army West Point hockey team received votes in the USCHO.com poll.
- This is in part due to the Black Knights' defensive unit. Army boasts the No. 2 scoring defense in the nation (1.86), while also ranking second in penalty kills with a .913 efficiency.
- The Cadets were awarded two points in this week's poll alongside AHA opponents, Robert Morris (6) and RIT (2).
- The Black Knights possess one of the most balanced offenses in the AHA with eight players tallying over two goals apiece and 17 Cadets with at least two points each.
- The underclassmen have been making their mark on the program as the freshmen have totaled 31 points off 12 goals and 19 assists.
- Army's sophomore class has also been productive posting 21 points on eight goals and 13 assists.
- Army and Holy Cross' rivalry dates back to 1956, and the teams have met 77 times in the 60-year span.
- After winning the past three meetings, the Black Knights have retaken the all-time series lead with a 34-33-10 advantage.
- At West Point, Army has an 18-13-10 success rate, while the Crusaders still have an edge in Massachusetts (20-14-0).
- The Crusaders started the season off on a high note with wins over #11 Providence (2-1 (OT)) and #20 Union (6-4).
- Recently, Holy Cross went 1-0-1 against Air Force and AIC, while splitting with Mercyhurst.
- Crusader T.J. Moore leads in league-only scoring with 1.12 goals per game. Overall, Moore has scored 11 goals and totals 17 points.
- Teammate Danny Lopez also has 17 points with eight goals and nine helpers. Mike Barrett (14), Spencer Trapp (12) and Scott Pooley (10) also have double-digit point totals on the season.
