Black Knights Close 2016 Season with Banquet
December 16, 2016 | Sprint Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point sprint football team wrapped up its 2016 campaign with its annual banquet last week.
The Black Knights compiled a 5-2 record, finishing third in the Collegiate Sprint Football League. Seventeen Cadets were also named to the All-CSFL teams, including seven first team selections.
The DC Adams Award, presented annually to the team member in the second class who distinguished himself through outstanding performance and dedication to the sprint football program, was received by defensive lineman Curtis Jerzerick. Jerzerick is a defensive lineman who anchors a defensive line that dominates the league like no other. He tied for the team lead in tackles with 47, with many of those being made while being double-teamed. He also had 6.5 tackles for loss, including 2.5 sacks. His leadership and outstanding play on the line led the defense to allowing a 0.9 yards average per rush and only 33 rushing yards per game. His efforts were recognized by coaches throughout the league as Second Team All-CSFL member.
The William F. Murdy Scholar Athlete Award is presented annually to the First Class Cadet who maintained the highest academic average throughout his four-year tenure with the Sprint Football Team. This year's recipient, Austin Breed, majored in Chemical Engineering and sports a GPA of 3.749 during his four-year tenure with the team. He led the team in receptions with 23 and was second in total yards with 314, touchdowns with four, and yards per game with 45. His longest play from scrimmage was a 73-yard touchdown against Post.
The George S. Perkins Memorial Award was awarded to Luke Fazzari and is presented annually to the graduating Sprint Football player who, during his four years as a cadet, distinguished himself through his uncommon dedication to the sprint football program and who best exemplified the spirit and motivation of the Army 150s. This year's recipient is a three-year starter for the second-ranked scoring and rushing offense in the league. He was recognized by opposing coaches as All-CSFL Frist Teamer as a junior and senior. He was the voice of the offensive line and led by example each and every day. He has been the steady rock for our offensive line for the past three seasons.
The Thomas B. Dyer Award is presented annually in memory of all sprint football players killed in the Vietnam conflict. It is presented annually to the graduating player who was the most valuable player during his four years as a cadet. This award is named in honor of Mr. Tom Dyer who is a former 150-pound football player, former President of AOG, and is a longtime supporter of Academy and of this team in particular. This year's recipient, senior co-captain and running back Marqus Burrell, earned yet another All-League honor as one of the league's best rushers. For four straight seasons, he has been the workhorse for the offense. Burrell led the team in rushing for the fourth-straight season and departs the team with 1,618 rushing yards in his career, which puts him in the Top five all-time for the Black Knights. Last year, he was recognized by the team as the co-recipient of the DC Adams award. This year, the team recognizes him as our four-year MVP.
The Col. John A. Robenson Award is presented annually to the most valuable Army sprint football player who exemplifies the qualities of self-discipline, unselfish team play, desire to excel, mature judgment, and respected leadership.
This year's recipient, senior co-captain and linebacker Matthew Tamburri, led the defense to finishing first in the league in eight different defensive categories. He tied for ninth in the league in tackles with 47 (22 solo, 25 assist). Opposing coaches recognized his efforts by selecting him as First Team All-CSFL member as a junior and senior. Last year, he was recognized by the team as the co-recipient of the DC Adams award.
Head coach Mark West also announced the team's captains for the 2017 season in juniors Ty Galyean and Curtis Jerzerick with the First Lt. George C. Bass Memorial Award.
