Volleyball Tops Lehigh to Clinch Tournament Spot

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team collected a 3-1 victory over Lehigh in a Patriot League match on Friday evening at Gillis Field House. With the win, the Black Knights clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament.

Army improves to 19-10 overall and 11-4 in the Patriot League after the win, while Lehigh falls to 13-16 and 8-7. The Cadets took the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-22, respectively, before the Mountain Hawks grabbed a 25-22 victory in the third set. Army closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth and final set.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army sweeps Lehigh during the regular season, after also defeating the Mountain Hawks, 3-1, on Oct. 15 in Bethlehem, Pa.
- Vanessa Wesley led Army with 14 kills, while Allie Strong (13), Carolyn Bockrath (12) and Sydney Morriss (10) also reached double-digit kills on the evening.
- Nikki Lum paced the Cadets with 23 assists in the victory, and reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Haven Bethune tallied 22 assists.
- Strong and Wesley each accounted for a team-leading 16.0 points for the Black Knights.
- Ellie Petersen and Amber Clay each posted double-digit digs, finishing with 15 and 10 digs, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army rebounded from a 16-13 deficit in the opening set to come away with a narrow 25-23 victory. Wesley was credited with the kill to clinch the set, on an assist from Bockrath.
- The Mountain Hawks got out to a quick 3-0 advantage in the second set, but the Black Knights eventually came back to make the score, 21-21, and force a Lehigh timeout.
- Army tallied the next two points to go up 23-21 and force a second timeout by the visitors.
- The Cadets maintained the lead the rest of the way and Bockrath registered the final kill of the set on an assist from Petersen to give the hosts a 25-22 win and a 2-0 set lead.
- Lehigh led by as many as three points during the third set, but the hosts erased an early deficit to eventually force a 20-20 tie.
- The Mountain Hawks went up 22-20 before earning a 25-22 win in the third set to make the score 2-1, in favor of the Black Knights.
- Army came out quickly in the fourth set, taking a 10-3 lead before Lehigh won the next three points to make the score 10-6.
- The Cadets benefitted for a Lehigh service error before Strong held serve over the next five points for Army during a 6-0 run that brought the lead to 16-6.
- Army didn't allow its lead to slip below six the rest of the way, as Bockrath recorded the final kill of the match to give the hosts a 25-18 decision in the set and a 3-1 match victory.
UP NEXT
- Army hosts Bucknell on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. to close out the 2016 regular season. The Black Knights will honor senior Olivia Fairfield during a Senior Day ceremony prior to the match.
