Volleyball Faces Navy, Lafayette on the Road

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team travels to Navy and Lafayette this weekend for two Patriot League contests. Friday's match begins at 7 p.m. at the Naval Academy and is part of the Star Series presented by USAA, while Saturday's game will be played at 5 p.m. at Lafayette.

The Black Knights are looking to continue on its success from last year where they defeated the Mids in both the Star Match and regular contest. Army leads 45-12 in the all-time series record over Navy.

THE DETAILS
- Army went 1-1 last week with a (3-1) win over Loyola and a (3-0) deficit to league rival American.
- The Black Knights were led by Vanessa Wesley (2.6 kills per set) and Amber Clay (2.57). Carolyn Bockrath returned to the lineup for the Cadets after sitting out for an injury and totaled 16 kills on the week and a .481 hitting percentage.
- Sydney Morriss was successful on the outside with 17 kills on the week along with Courtney Horace who stepped in opposite Loyola with five key points in the first set.
- Haven Bethune led the team with six blocks and was followed by Morriss, Wesley and Olivia Fairfield who each had five.
- The Black Knights top the league in kills with 845 and a 13.00 kills per set average, and in opponent blocks by limiting their competitors to 1.62 per set.
NAVY
- Navy enters the weekend following a four-set loss to American Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., to bring its season record to 11-5 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League.
- The Mids captured their solo league victory when they swept Bucknell at home.
- As a team, Navy leads the league in opponent hitting percentage (.149), assists per set (12.29) and digs with 16.49 per set.
- Dorothy Murray leads the Mids with a .273 hitting percentage and 2.72 kills per set. Patricia Mattingly centers the offense by dishing out 9.12 assists per set, while Gabriela Martin and Sydney Shearn serve at least 0.35 aces per set.
LAFAYETTE
- Lafayette will host Holy Cross Friday night before facing the Cadets. The Leopards are 3-11 this season and have claimed a solo victory in league play, a 3-2 win over Loyola.
- Julia Howard (5.73) and Maria Balus (5.06) split time in the setters spot for Lafayette and rank eighth and ninth in the league for assists per set. Â
- Sonia Musso leads the team with 0.33 service aces per set, while Katie Rethmeyer and Katherine Stevens average 1.20 kills per set.
